What a bargain !!

I just love eBay at the moment. Someone if flooding it with uses parts all of it way over priced but everything from a screw to rocket cover either starts or ends with RARE. Really. There is also a G60 engine listed for 1000. Now to be fair you don’t see them all the time but a grand feels a little steep to me.

If the G60 is with the charger, thats not too steep.

I've sold some genuinely rare parts recently, good money is given for rare gen stuff!

All there. But what condition. Anyhow does not excuse a used shock absorber for £45 etc. Grump I’ve back to my happy place.

Wilbur.  That is the key, supply and demand what ever the user will bear.. or as my dad said, wilbur, usually with a few choice words….

You have to remember that I started on a 67 MG, when the only place to find parts were the Dealer, JC Whitney, and Sears and Roebuck back then.. (no internet, no pagers, no cell phones) Most cars had AM radios.

I did have a place in UK called Gordon Spice….that I ordered a lot of NOS interior parts and a working Speedo (Too Many Tickets usually going 4 miles off of the first generation Radar guns.).   That was before Paypal, and you had to send Bank notes converted from Dollars to Pounds…. and the Pounds were steep… I think I paid 80USD and 20dollars for shipping.

All through the post, nothing electric…. :)

So while it has gotten better locating things and paying for them…. The prices are still somewhat outrageous.

What do Divorces, Great Coffee, and Car Electrics all have in common?

They all start with GOOD Grounds.

There is another view if the parts are being driven up in cost from stripped cars then the cars are also being driven up. Hold on to your investment all it’s rainy day money at worst.

Yeah Brian and if your President gets his way eventually you will be banned from buying anything from outside of the United States. ;)

Mind you buying parts from the States even now is simply not worth it which is a shame really because you've got a lot of good stuff.

The import taxes to the EU just make it so expensive from the US.

Maybe with the 'Britexit'  we'll end up with buying parts from the US in the UK because of the 'Special Relationship' and then shipping them into the EU and visa versa.

You think it was hard in the good old days, well just take a breath and look again! ;)

Anyhow when a used part is being sold for 2x, 3x, 4/5/6 times what you can buy a new one for then fundamentally something is going wrong.

In one word, greed! ;)

Quite the opposite.
If sourcing parts becomes so expensive that the average person can't afford it then demand ultimately decreases and the bubble bursts.
Cars are never good investments, if you want to see your stock rise invest in oil, arms and fags.

The next one, a Cabby twin grill, used mixed bag of lights.

From a quick look at the advert the headlamps look slightly different but the inner spots are definitely odd.
If there are even Hella, well I've not seen them before.

Grill maybe genuine but no proof.
Clearly the badge not but the guy wants £295.95/$420/€400.

What bothers me about the above, is that one inner hasn't been cleaned and one is new or cleaned… It that the bother no, it is the rear side that I would be looking at as are the upper corner mounts intact or broken, and are the lower fingers intact or broken.  The "Blackened" emblem can be refreshed…. but I too, have picken up 2 or 3 grilles for less than 40 bucks at the breakers.

I was really stoked at the price of the Power steering pumps….. new 300 bucks a few years back…. Where as my brothers Vette was on 50…. Holy Hockey Sticks Batman.

I did find a new Pump for 90 dollars shipped made in China…. It works.

Oh heres a tip.  To clean the Inner Lights,,,,,,

Hot water a good 140 degrees  and 3 Efferdent Smokers Denture tablets.  Poor in water 1/2 way add tablets, after they fizz top off with water.  Let sit a few hours, then rinse out with hot water, and
shake dry, then gently warm air to the exterior and interior with hair dryer.

Well I've got still in the clear plastic sleeve a brand new double grill for a late Cabby.

All the sticky labels from VW,  I've had stored out of sunlight for a few years.

Never thought really of selling it but with the way the market is right now I could be tempted.

But this one honestly should only be fitted to a Concourse Cabby just to finish it off. ;)

Ahem….
If you'll all excuse me for a minute while we all conveniently forget that I'm a raging capitalist and professional bastid….
I got into VWs through my mates back in the '90's.  We were all mostly skateboarders and surfers down on the coast with little money but shared interests.
Back then, apart from a few exceptions, we helped each other out and hunting down rare parts was part of the fun.  Parts weren't normally stupidly priced and bartering was a pretty big thing.
Okay, so fast forward and we find ourselves in the situation we're in - idiots trying to extort cash from people.
I get it, people want to make money.  That's fine.  Knock yourselves out.  But trying to turn people's passion into your golden ticket is just a shetty move.
And I've done it, I've broken a load of cars for various reasons and made some good holiday/project money pout of it.  But I'd like to think the stuff was priced more than fairly and everyone was happy.
And what baffles me is that people actually buy this stuff.
Why on earth would you risk using bobbins old seals when you can get new from a company like Classic Vw for a lower price?  Because it's not OEM?  Who cares?  I'd rather have something that works properly and has the benefit of hindsight and new production methods than bragging rights because it's original kit whilst conveniently overlooking the fact that it's old and busted.
We genuinely had someone on the other forum who was happy because his tyres were original.
Honestly.
20 year old tyres.
I absolutely despair sometimes.
(This venting can be found in Volume 4 of my collection - Mr Funk gets the monk on)
Have an excellent day everyone, did I ever tell you how this all used to be fields?

I know exactly what you mean, I work for a company that restores old Porsche’s and the amount of times I’ve tried to explain to some old dude in bright trousers that just because that bit of metal that’s so rusty and thin that you can see daylight through it is original it really shouldn’t be there anymore.
As for parts they’re the worlds worst for buying low selling high, £1000 for a tail light £6000 for a deck lid and so on but you tell them it’s going to take 500-600 hrs to rebuild the brown mangled mess of metal they’ve presented you with then all of a sudden they come over all thrifty and need to save every square inch of “ original “ rust that they can.
And then more often than not are they’ve spent months telling you about there passion and how “they intended to use the car” and “it’s not just going to be another show pony “ they take it to a couple of shows, everyone tells them what a great job THEY’VE DONE !! and then they sell it for a vast profit based on the fact that it’s had a full resto !
That’s better! Sorry got a bit ranty myself there lol

Ha Ha!

Mr Funk, right as usual.

Jamie, that must drive you up the wall! It always amuses me when someone uses the phrase 'I spent hours working with (insert body, paint, interior, engine etc specialist) to ensure my vision was brought to life' and 'I had numerous phone conversations during the build and they sent me photo's '
I always think if you're going to pay someone to do the job for you, just let them crack on with it. 'I want it blue' should be about as much input as you're allowed!

But then don't claim 'I did a resto on it'

That is one large pile of rusted rotted shock towers, and I don't think that if you stripped it you could get 1000 for the parts.
