Selling a car to a buyer who is sending a pickup agent.

Post

Hey,

I'm selling a car at the moment and a guy has offered to buy the car. However he lives down south some 200 miles away fro myself and wants to send a pickup agent to collect the car. I will be paid in full first, check that the money has cleared then give him the address for the pick up.

Just wondering though how this all works, I've never sold a car like this before. What happens with the V5C? Is there anything I need to be careful about? Just looking for general advice really.

Thanks in advance!

I have now bought 2 cars like this and like your buyer I paid all up front.

The V5C was signed by the seller and sent up with the driver locked in the boot.

Ahh cool. I know people do it, it's just the case that I've never had any dealings like this myself. So I sign the part of the V5C and send it off to the DVLA and send the rest up with the car? Makes sense locking it in the boot.

I'm sounding like a total dunce here, but what's the case with keys also. What's to stop the pick up driver just making away with the car, then I have to refund the buyer and I've got a stolen car on my hands?

The transport co should be a reputable one who you can review online.

They should be insured etc and they need your keys to get the car on and off the trailer :-)

At the end of the day, you will have been paid and they will have booked the transporter st their cost and risk.

Doesn't the buyer have to sign the V5c as well? And then the seller sends it to DVLA?

In the perfect world but it's not possible if your not meeting.

When I think about it now, the V5C came with the car, all signed by the previous owner, then I signed it and sent it to the DVLA.

Yeah, I guess the DVLA won't know who sent it.

The DVLA normally stress that the seller should send off the V5C themselves. I guess this is to avoid the buyer from trying to keep it in the original owners name for whatever reason.

So for this transaction I'm doing, I'm going to have to sign the thing then send it down with the car?

My Sportline was collected by a company and sent off to Northern Ireland.

I had cleared funds before he arranged the collection, then all documents with the car plus the V5 were locked in the boot by me. I signed it and left the rest up to the new owner.

As long as you get a decent and honest seller and use a reputable and insured transporting company then there shouldn't be an issue.

The main thing for me would be perhaps not seeing the car before buying?

Haha that would be a shock.

Turns out the whole thing was a scam. I've received multiple others which were almost word for word copies of the last.

I've ended up listing the car on eBay instead.

If he was paying 1st and you didn't let car go until funds cleared and in your bank, interesting scam?

The trouble with doing nothing is that you never know when you are finished.

Initially the money was to be transferred to my bank, then last minute he no longer wanted to do that but instead use paypal.

I was then getting paypal emails saying that the money had been withheld as it was a large transfer amount. Everything was very convincing however there were links in the email that led to websites pretending to be paypal yet used a completely different URL.

He was then trying to convince me to let him send someone for the car while paypal sort the funds, using the emails as some sort of reassurance.

If you give it a google (paypal car scam) it'll give you loads of results, along with some poor people who actually have actually fallen for it aswell…
