Quick question about exhaust positioning

Being a novice with cars and engines, I was wondering if
someone could tell me why on my 1.8 carb cab the exhaust pipes run
down the back towards the car itself. I've recently went to the Bristol volkfest
and saw another cabby but there exhaust runs towards the front of the car.
Can anyone tell me the difference in the engines please

That simple then haha. So if I was going to put twin webers on mine. Would that be possible with exhaust running down behind?

You can but there is a issue with heat soak, .. Heat from the exhaust manifold effects the running
