petition to dvla to release old plates

Post

they've got your number!

I've been in recent dialogue with the dvla regarding a plate that used to grace little clio.
The clio is long time dead and the plate is too.

However, I believe with a little persuasion, the dvla will indeed change their view on this.

Please sign up to the petition and let's see what the dvla response is. Please spread to all corners to gain signatures. Thanks

There's a  typo in the link. To be taken seriously you need to sort that out but good luck with the petition.

Thanks yomp, but the link works for me on phone and laptop. You'll need to guide me to it. If it's the typo on the petition ('St' where it should read 'At', then I've no facility to edit this) then I'll have to live with it. If the link isn't working I'll try something else…

It's the "St" . i guess you can't edit a statement that folk have signed up to. That would be just wrong!

So if these old plates can come back will it be a free for all who can buy them or will be the last owner?
I still have some old green log books from the 1970's in those days if you scrapped a vehicle no one bothered about the log books.
There is one plate I would love to have back have the log book but if the petition goes OK would I be first inline or would it go to highest bidder?

When you say 'free for all', I fear the answer is yes.  If we get the requisite number of signatures (it's still less than 30!!, c'mon guys!!) then, if and when the rules change, I'd expect the DVLA will allocate them auction dates.

There is one in particular I'd want, but when putting my thinking cap on, I could have half a dozen really good ones for every day of the week.  The chap that owns CRA1G happened to stumble across the Piston Heads thread, that's not the one I'm after, but CRA16S or CRA19S would be very nice too.  There must be thousands of those numbers from the pre-63 days too.

The only limitations would be our imagination and funds!

The problem I see is, DVLA have no way of knowing how far "gone" the car is. For example, if its simply not been registered on the road for a couple of years but the car is in a reasonable condition, but registered as scrapped, I believe there is a process to "un-scrap" it and revert its registration number. But if the car's been completely destroyed, eg all parts split off, sold, thrown in the bin, and the bodyshell cubed then melted down for scrap steel, then obviously that car won't be back at any time.
