Mk3's

Post

Took the Golf out today (sunny day), did about 100 A road miles through East Sussex , Kent  saw a few mk2s, all acknowledged and a cpl of mk3s, and wife said she likes mk2s because they a are very similar to mk1s  ( at a distance can't tell, the difference) but that the mk3s look ugly and are totally different, and will never be a proper classic….just wondering what people's opinions  are on this.

Mk3's are winter beaters and cheap donors and that's it

The mk3 was a bit of a blob after the mk1 & 2 but as brad says they came with good engines for those of us that like to tinker!

Read somewhere this week that the Mk3 was tipped to be a future classic, everyone seems to ignore them at the moment so they will get scrapped when uneconomic to repair, or they get heavily modified.

I've a had few over years, I never intended to buy them I just ended up with them…..Good source for engines and the Cabs are super cheap and most are highly specs

The ugly sister of Golfs but the last one that was remotely DIY-able.

1983 Mars Red 1.8 Golf GTI
1987 Alpine White 1.8 Clipper Cabriolet

The trouble with doing nothing is that you never know when you are finished.

The shape did it no favours and the rust was always an issue.

There were some nice examples at dubshed last week. I know they are not to everyones tastes but then it would be a boring world if we all liked the same things. I like them and like all VW's there is a place for them.

I hate them….failing elec window mechanisms….roof lining starts to come off after a while.

I have owned one since 2005 and its still in the garage….sometimes i wonder why.

A mate has a Mk3 and I've never really been a fan, but they are growing on me. I also agree they are future classics. It'll get to a point where you just wont see them about as much.

To be fair I actually quite like them! Had a VR6 which was great - also years back drove a very slow diesel estate and for some reason really liked that too! lol

I've always had a soft spot for the mk3. Just because I can still remember my dad buying a brand new gti in 1996. I was 8 at the time and him getting that compared to the old Passat he had before, made it seem like the best thing ever!

it's Dragon Green with a Cream trim! Worst combo imo. VR6 are okay but they are slow and expensive. Its just a good noise. I've had 2 TDIs, ABF Vento and a 3.5 Cabby VR6 and they are good cars. I loved the ABF Vento. I still have the cabby, can't beat the VR noise with the roof off. I can't see them being classics as they aren't really anything special.

GTI 8Vs are garbage. 16V and VR6 are good but nothing special. Maybe annis will be the ones worth something?
