Wondered if someone could help me decipher my VIN please which has left me a little confused. My VIN is
WVWZZZ17ZEW093
A few pics of my Mk1 which I have owned now for over 25 years. A much loved part of the family.
Thank you,
Titch

Some folk say the EW in the VIN denotes campaign.

I would advise you edit the post and not show the last three numbers if not all six - there's too many bad people in this world …. VIN and reg number opens up a potential for cloning….

Ties in with the then annual factory closure in the summer.
In your case the 'E' is indeed for model year 1984 (which ran from Sept. '83 to Aug '84) though MK1 production as you know ended much sooner than that.
Your car has a Northern Irish (County Armagh) registration, again without checking it must date from around the early 1980's, original to the car?

I have an old document which shows the registration was a private registration, bought and transferred here in the UK (Middlesborough). Unfortunately I don't have anything which shows the original plate. Annoying.
I suspect it is one of the last tintops in 83 before the Campaign came in but frustrating to not know for sure.

Back then GIB supposedly stood for Good In Bed in some circles, they were always easy to sell on!

Check the door lock knobs. They were different on campaigns.
Least her steering wheel and gear knob.
Slide tilt sun roof
Some other bits can all point to a campaign.

Mk1 VIN Identification
* Factory sliding sunroof
* Green tinted glass
* Leather bound version of the four button steering wheel
* Twin headlamp grille fitted. Unlike the aftermarket version of this grille, the original supplementary lamps were foglamps not driving lamps. These can be spotted easily enough by the glass design. The foglamps have a vertical serrated pattern, the driving lamps are usually clear. The campaign was the only GTI to be factory fitted with twin headlamp grilles
* Different door lock pins. The older cars had door lock pins that looked like flat mushrooms. The campaign model ones were more slimline and had a dimple in the top
* Fuel cap with a spring loaded cover, and a black bezeled interior trim
* 14" Pirelli alloy wheels
* Built in Wolfsburg Germany
