help with i.d please on a mk1 gti

Hi all can anyone tell me exactly where the mk1 golf vin number or identification number that is stamped onto shell is?
Not had a mk1 for a long while & I bought a solid mk1 gti shell last month I have the old v5 but the metal vin plate that is normally riveted on under the bonnet is missing? so how can I match the number on the v5 to this shell so I can possibly get a vin plate made? thanks in advance
