Hi Guys, I bought a 1980 MK1 Jetta GLI Coupe (tin-sunroof model) and due to neglect from the previous owner sunroof seal perished and ruined the headlining. So car had no headlining when i bought it.
I am at the point where i can put in a new headlining in but information regarding MK1 jetta coupe's is next to impossible to find, so i have a few questions that i hope you more experienced MK1 VW heads can help me with
1. Obvious question, will a MK1 Golf sunroof model headlining fit a Jetta Coupe? - if some trimming for the C-pillar is required i don't mind
2. Headliner tensioning rod + end caps, does anyone know off the top of their heads how many i need for a sunroof model? - I'm assuming that it's most likely the same as the Golf
3. Does anyone know where i can purchase a good quality headling? - As with everything, there is a lot of rubbish out there and would prefer not to have to change one again a couple of years down the line
I would very much appreciate if you guys could help me out here as trying to research this has been doing my head in for some time.
Thanks,
Mairtin

Headliners - NEED HELP
Can’t answer the questions directly but Newtown commercials are the people to speak to. Excellent knowledge and really helpful. I brought mine from then and it looks great. They sell lots of accessories also so may be able to buy everything from one place.

A golf headliner will not fit a Jetta
You will need six headliner rods
Your best bet is to buy a length of the headliner material you want (there are a few who specialise in classic car material) and get a trimmer to fit it
If you need rods, get in touch as I may have some for sale

Don't fit it yourself would be my tip 😂
I ordered one from retro retrims, fit at the front & didn't fit at the back messaged Chris but never heard back!
Essentially was a waste of £90, should have just dropped it off somewhere & had it done!

I have heard good things about Newton and I planned to order a number of bits for my series 1 from them. I hope they can assist with your MK1 Jetta.
Those of you who have Newton headliners, is their black headliner the same material or texture as the original??
Thanks,
Christopher
