Falling in and out of love with my mk1.. am I the only one?

Who else shares this strange love hate relationship

I'm the same all the time…put it away at the end of the summer with everything working fine, went to start the other day & it looks like the relatively new fuel pump has seized along with no power to the dashboard.
I love it but everytime I look at it or go to use it there is always an issue.
Seriously thinking of ripping out the running gear & replacing with something modern in the hope it would be more reliable.

I pretty much hate mine at the moment…. it's in bits and looks cack… and I have zero motivation to work on it.

Didn't really enjoy driving it with the 1093cc  engine and sloppy porridge gearbox over the summer either… I only really still own it because I wanted too much money for it, so it never sold in the summer.

So I ripped it apart to give myself something to do… now I can't be bothered with it.

Waiting for the change in weather and lighter evenings, I'll get the love back then….. maybe. :/

Sounds like your torn between a Ford, ahem, & a Dub especially as the family vehicle is a Ford.. yeh they've brought out some beasts such as the Focus ST... that's about it isn't it? Colin McRae had a big part in the Focus growth along with Subaru, Fiesta ST? how popular are they? very, i'd say personally. Practical i suppose i relatively cheap though depreciate quite heavily... more than others perhaps & vice versa for other makes...

Your cabby is unique, individual & quite rare... in that colour too. you say about the drive & stuff but surely isn't that the fun of the car? isn't that why you originally bought it?

I get frustrated when i can't take mine for a drive, well i can but i won't in wet weather during the winter due to all the salt on the roads & stuff, when it's dry i'm out for a spin day or night when possible just to keep it ticking over as such   i've got a GTI so the power is there along with the fun element (did have a few minor problems when i bought it due to the previous owner being relatively old had it for 12 years & didn't do a lot of mileage & hidden in a garage. It took a bit of time, money & help off this awesome forum - TLC i think they call it

The actual feel of the drive is great, no power steering or ABS which i used to love in the 90's as my daily, a GTI too... mates had Pug GTI's, Uno Turbo, & Clio not sure whether it was a Williams but it was rapid, these had power steering - too easy   converted 1 of my mates to VW - not retro unfortunately, he's a bit of a money man, but he really likes my car, says it's '------- mint!'   - he had a MkIV anniversary for a few years now he's got a R which he's had for about 4 years or so, his wife's got a Polo so they're dubbed up
i suppose you gotta ask yourself the question... no, not do you feel lucky   are you really committed to the Dub? p.s. summers coming... top down.. sun blazing, people staring, smiling face... mmmmm just a thought hey... seriously dude, do what you think is right for you & your family, your choice nobody else.

I personally get low mileage on my Auto, but every time I drive my Cabby Topless I get 100-200 Smiles per gallon.

What do Divorces, Great Coffee, and Car Electrics all have in common?

They all start with GOOD Grounds.

Where are my DIY Links?

Wow Dean, please say what you feel and don't hold back! 😉
Just pulling ya leg my friend.

You make some interesting comments there but don't get me started with one small exception.

I go back to Colin McRae with the Opel Manta 400 and the RAC Lombard Rally when I worked as a cameraman for that event.

What a fantastic man and driver he was.
Rest in peace Colin!

Back on topic I think! ;)

just popped back from the coast over the downs with the roof down--we all need a day like that just to pep us up.

I'd love to be at the stage where I can take one of them out for a sunshine blast around the b-roads and just tuck them away for winter.

None of mine work at the moment

I've had the g60 cabby project on the go for about 4 years (only really been tinkering with it the past 6 months though ) that'll be usable around April/may.

I took my red gti off the road around 4 years ago for some engine work and I've no idea when I'm getting that back in 1 piece.

Don't get me started on the blue car,  (always wanted a helios blue one just as it would have left the factory) bought as a resto project ,  stripped it down to a bare shell, welding has been started but I really don't know if this one will ever get finished, bitten off too much with it really.

Enjoy your car while you can,  forget about it when it's winter and keep it as a summer toy,  you'll regret letting it go when the sun makes an appearance

Sounds like the majority of problems are niggly little ones.

Remember chaps the worst thing you can do is to store a car for months and not use it. They rot,, rubber perishes and wires corrode.

Keep them taxed and use it on the rare days it's dry.

Whether that's just to the pub on a wednesday for shandy or out with the family on saturday afternoon for a couple of hours.

Go and start it at least once a week as well.

(Says the man who's Derby has only moved 4 times in the last 12 months, once to another garage for storage, to Brstol Volksfest, to the AGM and then moving garage again. Poor old thing!)

Winters a pain in the neck. I've got 2 more bits of interior trim to do on Mynx and have had since December!

We're all the same i think.
