Cabrio finally on Irish plates-Now for the work.

Last Wednesday finally saw my '83 GTI Cab being registered in Ireland and the process wasn't nearly as horrific as I expected.
Now the car is legal, I need to start addressing the job list which has evolved somewhat since getting the car originally.
First thing is replacing the block-to-heater hiose which shot it's load on the way home from having the car inspected for re-reg and that has been ordered from VW Heritage so should be with me soon.

The biggest issue to have reared its ugly head is two massive leaks at the top pf each quarter light where the roof seals, or fails to in this case, against the bulky rubber where the door glass stops.
This didn't leak before a few days ago when I was fettling the car for the test and was happily driving with the top down childishly enjoying the bang from the tail pipe on hard upshifts.

I parked it and put up the roof the same way as usual but the fext morning the two front seats were soaked and the water was dripping. or trickling really, onto the front edges of the seat bolsters and they are a soggy mess.
The carpet had previously been removed and discarded as it was a soggy stinking mess due to the car being left outside with blocked drainage channles. a missing scuttle panel cover and partially open windows.
I need to cure this before any further work is done as there's no point in fitting a new interior into a paddling pool.

Thanks to everyone on this site who has helped me get the car this far along

Nice one GeeTeeAye

You will need those door rubbers which start at the top of the door and finish underneath the door. Expensive bit of kit if your buying them new. Might be lucky to pick up good second hand ones. Stick a post in parts wanted! ;)

Where are u based in Ireland? Any pics?

Cheers Hugh.

Thanks for confirming my fear regarding the leak!
I'm based near Athlone and I'll attempt to post a couple of pics of the car today.
The more I look at it, the more I like it but the problem is that it's missing quiet a bit of trim and may prove very costly to put back in proper order.
Things like sill trim, pillar trim, quarterlight and windscreen trim don't come easy or inexpensive and it needs the correct remote door mirrors as well along with a complete interior including a dashboard and headlining and maybe a loom!
Drives well though but I'm not sure how much I want to pour into it so maybe I'll declare it a "rolling restoration" and just enjoy it and sort it as I go.
Has the potential to be a great car but could just as easily become a dire money pit.
Time will tell
