so i got one today..a barn find - no keys and not run in a long while by the looks of it…
I was impatient i think,, chucked some diesel in her, checked oil and loaded water in… pulled the ignition wires…
now first i started by touching the red and red/black wires - you could here the starter motor turning… then i connected the dash lights with the power cable and had dash lights/blower etc… from memory i thought both dash and starter need to have power to start car - but when i gave power simultaneously to both everything stopped working…
ive checked all the fuses and all ok there…but cant get back to where i was an hour ago and before i messed with the wires!
oh dear what have i done!
please tell me! : )
cheers

the wires i connected were:
*red - red/black = starter
*red - black/yellow.
remaining ignition wires are:
*black/grey to a large spade connector
*two wires to a small spade connector - 1:black/grey 2:small black wire.

I would remove the steering shaft covers, the steering wheel, turn/wiper stalks, remove the upper bearing housing and then the ignition switch as once is it free of the housing you can use a screwdriver to engage it. leave it dangle and replace the steering wheel and turns/wiper stalks.
whole lot easier….
Sorry I thought that you had a diesel… Oppsy on me. As Diesels don't have coils, gassers do.
Less chance of screwing something up.
Throwing Diesel in a Gasser isn't a good thing to do.
As i said in the previous post, it is easy to start a diesel….
3 wires from the battery positive.
One for the glow plugs.
One for the fuel shutoff (on injection pump)
One for the starter solenoid.
