1.8 gti problems

Hi all I've got a mark 1 golf. 1.8. Gti clipper  1992  recently purchased I'm having trouble when she reaches temperature she starts juddering then the engine cuts out .  I have checked fuel etc and new fuel filter etc etc obs seems to be electrical any suggestions on diagnosing the problem and what manual is the best ??? Can't seem to find a clipperconvertible  one  thank you

the brown haynes is the best one you can get, covers the cabrio and scirocco.

does the main pump get louder? could be the lifter pump in the tank has packed up which makes the main struggle. if you disconnect one of the wires to the main pump you can then listen for the main pump if the pumps normally prime with the ignition. if not swap the 17/18 relay over into the pump relay socket and switch the ignition on then the pumps will run all the time ignition is on.

if you cant hear the lifter with main disconnected then its duff, gsf sell them. while the lifter unit is out shine a torch into the tank and see if you can see any rust or other debris inside.

check the filler neck for corrosion as well, be sure to clean it off properly and really get up into the hidden areas with your fingers.
