A hair dryer or hot air gun at distance. You want to aim at melting the glue/not the paint and peel as you go. Take it slow though ! 8)

Try http://www.mytyres.co.uk I bought mine from them and got the local fitter to put them on saved a fortune and had the tyres i wanted. Toyo proxies t1-r's very good :D not sure if they do 13's mine are 195x50x15.

The reason I asked about the matt black is, I think IMO it looks like unpainted panels. Also once it's painted you can't polish it to bring it back to life and I'm sure the rough surface will slowley hold dirt. Is it to be your daily driver? I would go for a gloss black or dark gloss grey whith your wheels and chrome bits, But it your car, so its your choice.

(If you do sell it later to upgrade to a GTI   re-sale will be lower as well, a tidy GTi in matt black didn't get much interest on ebay recently)

The GTI's are quick but do feel heaver than the smaller engine cars so feel slightly less agile, but they go

strip removal

hi .the best way to any body strip of is boil your kettle then pour over  small area of body strip and simply peel of strip what you find is that it will harden very quickly so poor your water over again and peel away

Sorry I don't have any pics. Not sure if a DIY matt job would be any eaiser to get good results :dontknow: Painting is expensive, so be sure before commiting. I would sort the rust, paint the repairs and think on it. then go for whatever finish you want.

Rob :D

Hi nice driver you got there I love that original colour! 8)   I'm a young 'un with a driver too but mine's white, I saved a pic of what I think Robb is talking about from eBay, it only fetched about ?650.
You can also see how the owner has put rear arch trims on the front arches, D'oh! :banghead:

i think that looks really nice...but thats my opinion, its only a golf driver anyway, i think keeping a gti standard looking is cool, but i want to tinker with the looks of mine a bit, nothing like a 20inch exhaust and 50 inch wheels..im going for a retro look (chrome strips all around on their way from ebay) phataz do you have any idea how you would care for the matt paint?

A mate of mine painted his Landrover matt black with a brush :?  Most of the time it's covered in mud but when he does wash it, it comes up OK with a jetwash and a bit of a sponge.

Personally I would rather paint it a nice metallic colour (original looks good on that car!) and go for the retro look that way plus a lot of people seem to be doing the matt black thing now, but each to their own. It'll be a tidy car once the little bits of rust are tidied up :y:

MK1 GTI Campaign
MK2 GTI 8v
Imitation Magic Tree - 'Black Ice' smell
Plenty of rust
Embarrasing fuel problem
Porous cooling system!

haha, sounds like a cool landrover bit off the subject but me and a friend were going halfs on a suzuki samuri to drive over the chase never got round to it though.

Im going to post some more pics of the rust tommorow when i get those spatts off, hopefully the sticker too. Im not too keen on the original colour and the roof is in seriously bad condition, no rust but really really matt.

Im going to stick with the matt idea now, i know its getting more common but i think it looks pretty swish.

No idea how to care for matt paint, but I have heard that it dries by itself immediately after washing it! 8O   I think matt would look good with your chrome wheels, but you're not thinking of debadging it (the front at least) like that one from eBay, are you?  Cos in my personal opinion debadged grills look rubbish on any mk1.

I think as long as you get the stance right it'll look cool 8)

I take it you're gonna lower it?

hmm im pulled between matt black and gloss black now…the matt is pretty different looking. Yeah i dont like debadged grills…ive just switched to a single lamp and am going to get the badge changed to the black one.
Im stuck with lowering, no one on here really knows a good ride height on 50 profile tyres.

I think it's a good rule of thumb that if you modify a car then try to enhance its value and avoid making it un-saleable. A lot of Max Power boys sink a fortune into their cars and they end up looking like something off a fairground ride. They will never get back what they've invested in their cars.

I'm not suggesting you intend to sell your car but may want to change it at some point in the future. A nice glossy black MK1 will always attract more punters than a matt black one.

Off course it's upto you but unless your 100% sure that's the finish you want, don't paint it matt black. It will just look unfinished.

How about white?

I lowered my driver 40mm on G-max shocks and springs and get no rubbing with 15 inch rim on 195/50's.  Are your wheels 13" cos i'm pretty sure they wont rub? I reckon you could probably go for 60mm safely,

Keep us posted on the resto 8)
