hood leaking onto front seats
The hood on my golf is pretty battered but only appears to be leaking onto the front drivers seats onto the bolster on each side, like this persons;
Anyone know if it is a seal? (not the small fat furry things that like mackeral) as i can't see any gaps.
Cheers Johnny

…Yeah….that's my shot of my Malteser bucket mod on my GTI….!!!!!
I tried EVERYTHING…..it was the hood fabric itself - had gone porous !!!! Demonstrated by holding it up (once removed) and putting water in it - pored through it like a sieve !!!!!
New outer skins - no more leaks…..both cars totally dry….

Can also be caused by broken side cables that. the roof does not come far enough over the window top causing the leak.
…yes they COULD if the roof sides expose the frame side seals…but in my case I taped some 'flaps' over the sides….and water STILL poured in….

my side cables have gone. the roof is immaculate but i can't see where the cable attatches at the back of the car. is replacing this a job for an amateur or do i have to send it to a garage? i'd be grateful for a bit of advice…
Woohoo, no leaks... splash... Damn!...

Im in the same boat as nuts, was going to ask how far the roof should sit but found a link on here about the cables, my roof is also mint apart from the cables, can they be tightened or replaced without the whole roof being done???Surely?

The tension springs may be awkward on later models - on our Clipper ('89) they are located at the front on sides of the header rail…..on the GTI ('87) they are at the back at the top of the rearmost pivoting section of the frame and easy to get to…….got some pics SOMEWHERE !!!!
Found it……A is spring locations on the Clipper, B is the GTI

new cable fitted on driver's side. Quite straight forward really.
Before
Anyway - here is what i did:
Remove rubber seal from front side of roof, remove seal fron rear side of roof.
Remove the seal holders (4 screws each)
Carefully prise out the plastic screw plugs
Peal back hood material
Remove spring
pull broken cabel out
Feed a length of brake pipe through cable run
Attach new cable and pull through
Attach cable at front
Attach to spring at rear and hook up spring
Put it all back together
Job done

Right, I decided to do this today, because it's the first time it's not rained for about 12 years. All was going well till I got the strips off and round the fabric was rivetted to the frame underneath the strips  What do I do? (bear in mind I'm not the most technically-minded woman around) Also I don't seem to have the little clip things at the end of the seals - do I panic?

Are you replacing the side cables? If you aren't able to feed the side cables through the sides of the hood without removing the rivets then you'll need to drill the heads off the rivets.
When you refit it all you can leave forget about fitting new rivets if you want. They're aren't really essential. The glue should hold the sides of the hood onto the frame enough.
Dont worry too much about the plastic clips being missing either. They just stop the seals from sliding about but the seals never slide anyway.
Cheers,
Ross

Thanks, yes it's the side cables.
I have found the springs at the back, and the broken cables running through the channels at the side, but I am not sure what I'm looking for for where they attach at the front. Any ideas?

Yes they should hook over the little stumps that stick out here…
The cable runs through the side of the hood and appears out of a hole just behind the front side flap of hood fabric that gets glued to the frame. Hopefully you can see in this pic what I mean…
If you can see both ends of the old cable join the new and old cable together securely with a tough bit of cord so you can pull the new cable through the hood…

Brilliant. Thanks!
It's now started raining, so I'll have another go next time it's fine.
