Dash board rattles /squeaks. Any help

When I bought my GTI ( late 82 model) in june 99 ,I noticed there were quite a lot of rubber wedges made up and wedged in various different places around the top of the dash. It may of worked then but it dose'nt now.    I've tried extra wedges in differnt sizes ,and spayed some wd40 around the join ,which  helped but still have some noise.  I thought one time i'll take the dash completely out and glue some thin baze cloth to all the mating surfaces, but this is a bigger job than I want to do. The worst areas seem around the clocks and switches.
Any help i'm sure will help a lot of us.    Ali

yeah mate not trying to be funny, but its a mk1, i dont think there is a way to stop these, even if you take the whole dash apart and fix the existing ones, new ones will come from the pressure on the dash from where you have fixed them within a couple of days! live with them, or do what i do and turn your sounds up lol

i live to dub....

…yes, I've tried this without much success - wedging foam rubber between as many edges as I can, but the squeaks and buzzes still persist…Also a lot of noise comes straight through from the engine. I've often thought of taking out the dash and soundproofing the bulkhead, and dealing with the dash as I put it back in, much as you suggest.
Anybody done this with success? Any pics?
Otherwise, turning the sounds up certainly takes your mind off the other noises!

I think its worth taking the dash apart, you might not even have to take the dash out,but just the gauges. When I took my gauges out to fit some brighter bulbs, I noticed the two metal brackets, that brace the dash and the gauges rest on, were lose. It turned out that 1 screw on each had (presumably) vibrated themselves lose and fallen out. Put some others in, did all the others up, found a few joins missing screws, put some more in. A lot better imo sounds like only one mouse instead of 12. Maybe you might have some missing screws too? Best way to tell is to open her up and get screwing…
Good luck

I sometimes get a bit of a click from the dash as the car flexes. I had a mk1 cab years ago too that did the same from what I can remember! Just one of those things!  :(

…it's a Mk1 thing….

My first Mk1 rattled and buzzed all it's life (233,000 miles, 1981 - 1998 RIP) - NEVER cured it…

..the Clipper is ok apart from one very annoying little buzz/rattle from the right hand side at between 1000 and 3000 revs……5 years and STILL can't find it…

…the GTI rattled worse than a tinker's cart till the dash was completely stripped out and reinstalled…..not a squeek now…

Owning a Mk1 cabby is a vertical learning curve…

I know this is a VERY old thread….. But I've managed to almost completely eradicate many annoying creaks and squeaks from my "Cabby" by spraying (yes spraying) fairly copious amounts of https://gt85.co.uk/gt85-original/ around the gap between the Windscreen and Dash. Also vents and everywhere else too. Smells quite pleasant too …….

Stick with me but I have used rubber washers under the screws that mount the dash surround to the dash board. It stops you breaking the plastic, stops the squeeks and you cant see it!
