Cabrio roof making lots of noise

The roof on my Rivage is making some loud juddering noises. I've noticed it for a while now and it's really starting to bug me. I've got coilovers and the ride is pretty stiff but the roof is proper annoying with it's juddering. When i'm driving on a smooth'ish section of road it stays quiet, but when there is the slightest uneven road surface it bangs around driving me mad.

I've pressed my hand against the roof really quiet hard as i'm driving along and it's definatly the roof. I've even put my hand up inside the head lining and felt the cross members as it's juddering and tried to "dampen" the vibration!  :banghead:  :dontknow:

How can I adjust the roof to stop this noise?

Hi m8, have you tried tightning the roof clips at the front?

No, how do you do that?

the hooks can be screwed in, there is a locking nut on them, slacken them off, twist the hooks in, to the desired level, then do up the locking nuts. hope this helps 8-)

would just like to add -  DO NOT TIGHTEN THEM TOO MUCH! I did this the other week because mine was making a rattling noise, and i snapped a handle straight off.

Ok, tightened to front hooks yesterday, only 1 turn. And no more roof judder! Success, but I noticed that the passenger hook has more thread showing than the drivers side one? Also on the out side of the car, the roof seems to sit ever so slightly higher than the drivers side. Theres a small plastic strip visible by the roll bar on the passenger side that's not visible on the drivers side. I'll take some pics later.

Could this be down to the eccentric adjusters in the middle of the roof? According to the bently manual, they adjust how the roof fits on to the roll bar.

I have the exact same thing, and mine is slightly worse than yours. I think its just the way the roof sits on the frame and with it being stretched. I have not had any problems with it so i wouldn't worry at all.

mine is the same, it was really bad when I had a vinal roof, when I replaced it with mohair, no more gaps, I guess the vinal shrinks with age, glad that you have managed to sort it out.

Bouchay, firstly thanks for posting this. I think I have had the same issue on my golf rivage.
Annoyingly though last week after following this thread I decided to tighten mine up too much and also broke my handle off. Only then did I realise that I have one locking handle and one normal handle - without a locking button to release - on either side of my cabriolet roof. I have since purchased a matching lockable handle only to find it won't lock. It looked like within your photos that you have the normal handles on either side. Is that correct? Are the normal handles - without a locking button to release - the correct ones for the golf Rivage? Could this be why my roof was knocking so much as I have had the wrong handle fitted?
I hope that you or anyone else reading this can help?
Thanks and keep up the good friendly banter please everyone!
:-)

Ps: I live in Hertford of there are any friendly mk 1-ers out there happy to help me on this? Or can recommend any good passionate cheap mechanics if ever I need one! Thanks

Passenger side has the locking handle so if they are holding it as a grab handle while driving they don't open the roof.
Drivers side none locking handle, you are very unlikely to grab the handle while driving as your hand should be on the steering wheel!

Passenger side is supposed to be the locking one as this would have been the correct way round originally on the Left hand drive mk1 cabbys. They're easy enough to replace, I had to replace the locking passenger one a while back now. But when I bought one off eBay and fitted it, I realised that the thread on the adjustment hook was different. The later cabbys have more threads to turn, I must have bought an early one. It works a treat though.

If you have any roof troubles, PM chortle. He's the roof yoda, he knows everything to do with cabby roofs and has a very nice green Rivage. And to top it off he's a very nice chap  ;-)

Thanks for your help bouchay. Turns out the part I was fitting was also broken - also due to overtightening - so have contacted the seller and he has a spare non-locking handle for me. I am very keen to keep the whole car original and by keeping a non-locking handle on the passenger side goes against my mentality but I am only hearing stories on here of lockable ones breaking so I am going to play it safe and fit my non-locking one part when it arrives with me hopefully tomorrow. Thanks for your reply and recommending chortle.

Have you tried PM'ing FUNKSTAR and asking him if he's got any roof handles? He usually has some cabbys that he's breaking.

Get some pics up ov yer Rivage then ;)
