Cracked head

mk1 93 Golf1 Cabrio

Just bought a really clean 93 golf1 cabrio 1800 with 140k km in Germany.
After purchase i had driven only 100km then took it to the garage to have the oil-leaking head fixed, plus timing belt change and fix the non working temperature gauge! (I overlooked the non working guage when i bought the car)

All work was done: new head gasket, water pump, timing belt, generator belt.

Mechanic started engine and it initally ran well for 2mins then he went home. The following morning he tried to start it again but the oil light would not go out. So he started investigating.
Had to strip the head down and he noticed that the RHS cam support was cracked. He told me that this crack would disturb the flow of oil to the camshaft hence thr head would have to be replaced. He suspects that all the damage was caused some time ago when the engine overheated due to the leaking head gasket.

Does any one have advice  or had a similar problem?

Does any one have advice about sourcing a good replacemnt head?
Many thanks
Stefan
PS I can post a picture if anyone is interested

it is true that if there is a problem with the cam bearings you will loose oil pressure, had the same on my mk2 gti with damaged bearing surfaces. since its a 93 its probably runnign digifant engine management? if so a mk2 golf digifant head is the same if that helps :)

hi guys sorry for the long delay, have been waiting for my mate/mechanic to finish the car, new head and a new clutch
Well, it's been a long journey, the head has been replaced sourced from a scraped MK1. Oil pressure is back to normal and the engine is running sweet. The main problem is the cost for all the work (almost as much as i paid for the car!) So it seems that the original head was damamged a very small crack is visible!

But the work continues:
1. water temp gauge has NEVER worked
2. Idle is rough
3. gear change is notchy especially into second gear

PS there are still a few really good VW mk1's here in Germany that have really only ever been used in the summer (take a look at www.mobile.de)

Many thanks for any help
Stefan

Hi guys,

Well things have moved on and also for the better!

1. Temp guage was an easy fix, after checking the sensor cable that was good, the sensor was replaced and all is ok
2. Rough idle I have been told has to do with the Lambda sensor that degrades with time and is a normal effect.
3. This was the best bit! was jsut a change of the gear change mechanism now is a slick-shift!

Have a great contact in Germany, mechanic and stockist of Golf1 parts, will only take my car here in future:

Great news Stefan, all steps forward

Yes Lambda sensors do degrade over time
