Just had my engine swapped to the TSR block but the mechanic had to use my original head because the donor engine had carbs on. It is now very tappety once the engine gets warm and I never had this problem before. Any idea guys?😎

So it wasn't a little bit tappety before with the old lump.
I'm a little surprised because normally they are like that from cold until the oil gets up there.
This is a question that often comes up about the big block engines.

Mine is the same tappety when cold but still taps occasionally was quite before I serviced it used engine flush

What type of tappets do you have, solid type or hydraulic?

If you are missing a cam shaft cap when you remove the rocker cover you have hydraulic tappets, if you have all the caps in place you have solid shims, with solid shims you can buy replacement ones but you need to measure the gap between the cam and the shim (guide in Haynes manual) they do need checking every few years.
Hydraulic tappets adjust them selves but do also wear out, you can clean them out but which can help or buy new ones.
I think it's about 1985 when VW changed over to hydraulic tappets?
My Scirocco with solid shims, notice all 5 caps in place you will be missing No 4 (left to right) if you hydraulic tappets.

If that is your car in the picture and your car is newer than 1987 (when VW fitted the body kit) and the original engine in it I guess you will hydraulic tappets, does the noise comes and goes.
What oil did you use and what oil filter?

You should really be using 10W40 in these old engines and I would recommend using MANN or genuine VW oil filters.
Lots of places sell the oil filters as they are fitted to a lot of cars/models.
Crosland Euro car part oil filter not very good???
5W30 a bit thin really???
I guess you made the mistake of following the link on the Euro car parts page on the oil choice?
Don't believe what the Euro car part website tells you as it wrong on a lot of parts and info.

Hope it does help but Hydraulic tappets do wear out, you can take them apart and clean them which may also help, there is a few guides on youtube but when I cleaned mine last year I could not remove the ball and spring from the insides as mentioned in the videos as it's not possible on my tappets as they are sealed.
Mine do sometimes tap a little when cold but they go quite again after about a minute and if you rev to about 2000 rpm then drop back to idle to get the oil pressure up.

Quick update. Had a local technician look at my engine and he says it's getting oil and everything seems OK. So the only thing he could put it down to is the bottom end might be too powerful for the top end. In other words the head could do with a full refurb to bring it inline with the rest of the car. So if this is correct should i use the original TSR head and fit twin 40's or bike carbs, go back to the 32/36 that was fitted to the TSR head or is there another option like adjusting shims?? 😎

Blimey, you remembered all that after you drove away from the garage - or did the mechanic type it for you??!!!
I'd stick with the original engine and overhaul that!!!
