Oil dipstick

Hi hope this is in correct place.  I've got a mk1gti 1.8 golf.  It's  got the old style dipstick with the metal hoop .  Just wondering if anyone knows if I should have one of those small orange plastic  tubes at the top of the metal tube.  Cheers for any help.  

Mine doesn't and never has in the 14 years I've had it.

The later (and carb) Cabrio has the later plastic extension to the tube with the corresponding different dip stick.

My 83 came with the metal hoop dipstick from new so you have the correct one.

 I have a 83 cabby Gti with 1.8 DX engine which does not have the plastic tube, also my previous 83 tintop did not.

the plastic guide came in after july 1983, they come in various colours but all the same length
