leaking hose HELP

Hi Folks,

I picked my 1986 caby up last night and it seemed to drive well enough but on driving it today I firstly smelled a burning smell then noticed smoke coming from the engine bay after further inspection is seems to be happening due to oil dripping from perished hoses around the rocker cover, the car also now seems to be cutting out every time I stop at lights etc although it does re start no problem it's running rough as if the mixture isn't right see below for image of the hoses the oil is leaking from I'd much appreciate if someone could let me know what hoses I need to order(the main culprit is the hose and connector that is directly below the cable in the photo the hose also attaches to the airbox) please help as I'm starting to worry I've bought a lemon lol.

I think you are referring to the breather pipes. Does one of them connect to the outlet on the top of the rocker cover? They probably need cleaning out. If you take off the rocker cover, there is a fixed metal filter gauze inside, underneath the breather outlet - it can get very bunged up. Soak in your preferred degreaser, petrol, etc then blow through with an airline if you have one. Use degreaser to clean out the various breather pipes as well.

You could get new ones from VW a while back, your problem seems to be happening as the hose going into it from the side is to long and the breather hose coming out from the rocker cover is squashed.
Clean out the metal gauze in rocker cover, you will need to fit a new rocker cover gasket if you remove the rocker cover if it's a cork style one.

The leaking oil at the back of the engine may just be the rocker cover gasket leaking anyway as it's a common problem, check the nut's at that end of the rocker cover aren't lose?

Also the electrical tape bodge around the breather from the inlet manifold to the brake servo won't be helping things.

You should really post this up on the technical help section under big block injection cars as I only stumbled onto this by mistake, you will get a more response there :-)

Turns out there was a large tear in the back of the valve housing I have managed to source a replacement from a supplier in Germany picture below  20151015_140411.jpg
