KJET issues - please help!

Post

Hi guys,

ive had a search for the same issues i'm having on previous posts but i think i'm a bit too confused to make any sense of what i'm seeing!

basically i took the head off my engine to sort out the valve stem seals. i think my first mistake was to mark the timing where it was and then put it back together in the same place, it wasn't great to start with but now when i've checked it with a timing light its a long way out and when i turn the distributor closer to where it should be it runs worse.

on top of this i think i have an issue with the warm up as it runs for a minute or so cold and then again after about 5-10 mins when its hot but in between it bounces the revs up and down and wants to cut out (with the occasional backfire thrown in for good measure)

i'm assuming that i'll need to sort the timing out properly before i tackle the other issues? i'm not exactly a expert working with engines but i'm happy to have a go and i usually end up with a good enough result, but i've not tackled a problem like this by myself before and i'm starting to lose heart so any advice would be greatly appreciated!

if you have had the head off and it is back firing i would guess you are a tooth out on the timing belt. buy a Haynes manual and check them.

You can buy them direct from Haynes.  Check http://www.haynes.co.uk/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/CategoryDisplay?catalogId=10001&storeId=10001&categoryId=10215&langId=-1&parent_category_rn=18501&top_category=10001
Make sure your engine number is covered by the relevant manual, in case your engine has been replaced as mine was.  You can phone their technical office for clarification.

this is a great guide, thanks!

am i right in thinking the gearbox timing mark is on the top of the gearbox under a green plastic cap? if that is the one is there any way to get it out?! i can take off 1 part of it that is about the diameter of a 1p coin but not the other bit which looks like its screwed in?

It is screwed in
There is a tool I found on eBay from an engineering company for £10 or find a bolt the right size and lock 2 nuts so you can get a socket on it

Or tap it round with hammer and screwdriver/chisel/drift

the brown mk1 haynes manual covers pretty much everything you need to know, just make sure its the later one which says cabrio and scirocco on the front.

I dont think they cover the very late digifant engine but as you say yours is kjet it'll be covered just fine.
