hello again.. andyphill mark1gls rubjonny
looking at my previous message… it shouldn't have been the Thermo switch which i said for about £20 - correction! :$ Thermo Time Switch - £75+++!!!
anyway, got a Voltmeter & had a look at this - connected up to the TTS & it was getting Voltage through it so it's not that.. took off the Meter head cover & gave this a clean… a small amount of cr P in there, also around the head itself… cleaned around there with some Carb cleaner… the Plunger seemed ok, moving quite well…

started her up & there was little splutter.. it is better!
Took her for a good spin on the Motorway & she felt good, accelerating nicely… with the top down the MFA is reading about 29-30mpg, not sure how good or bad that is as i've got nothing to compare to…
Just feel it's just not quite right..
perhaps when i get time, i'll check a few other things out (quite awkward to get to some things - need the right tools)

Cheers, Dean.

Make sure you are using the right petrol for the timing, super unleaded using the standard timing setting and normal unleaded needs the timing retarded.
I found the engine runs smoother and has more performance on super unleaded.

My MFA reads about 40 mpg on commute to work but I live in Somerset with no traffic jams (unless it's Glastonbury festival week) but the MFA could be out so I would not take it to be 100% accurate, best to work out MPG the old fashion way.
Look at your spark plugs if black and sooty to rich, if grey OK if white to weak.

quick question, why is my Thermo Time Switch blue?
when i've been looking on the 'net they seem to be zinc around the hex/nut area… my code seems to begin with 02 not 04 as on some sites recommendations…
any idea guys???

Cheers, Dean.

It may of been changed for a blue digifant one as they may be easier to find or they had one lying about?
Picture of it would be good.

kjet dont like this at all, the sender would mean the 5th injector always sprays regardless of the engine temp as its variable resistance rather than a thermoswitch.

i was troubleshooting a kjet mk1 for a fair while before i noticed it had an early digifant mk2 temp sensor which is similar looking to the thermoswitch.

he then told me it had an engine swap from a mk2 golf which he hadn't mentioned before

yup thats fine, doesn't look too bad to me but only way to know is check it.

pull the 5th injector and pop it into a pot then crank the engine briefly stone cold, it should spray. put it back in and fire the engine to warm it a bit, then pull it out again to recheck and it shouldn't spray :)

might be a hole for a grub screw for adjustment perhaps, anything visible inside?

bit of corrosion is ok I've seen far worse on workin units. but from your testing looks like its dead so go shopping :)

Morning, brought my car to work this morning - the Golf :), as i'm getting some rear arch/spat protectors put on.
Tried to start the car without the TTS switch connected & it wouldn't fire just turned over… so attached & fired up straight away (still my starting issue) when she was ticking over, got the cold smoke, if you like but there was slight drips of water.. does that mean she's running rich or something? or is it because it's now colder??? :|I've just googled that question - seems ok… physics!!! combustion- i'll leave it there i think…

water is a normal byproduct of combustion so its normal to see a small amount, plus if its cold out water condenses inside the exhaust system and then gets spat out when you fire it up etc.

wherabouts was the smell coming from? if near the rear of the car your fuel tank has a vent back there which could explain it.  but worth getting under and looking at all the fuel lines and connections for any weeping, plus look at the wee screw on the back of the fuel accumulator for any dampness also

probably just a case of old car rich start smell then. or just the tank venting a bit.  as long as it clears up and is fine for the rest of the day id not be too worried tbh.

once you're happy with the condition of the engine and the timing get down the local garage and give them some back pocket tax free cash moneys to get the co reset and you should be sorted
