Georgie's off the road boo

My rad fan had just about died, so I ordered (non-genuine) one from GSF. It came, I fitted it, and then discovered the connector on the car didn't fit on the fan. The one on the car has 2 female sockets; however the replacement fan has 3 prongs.
I rang GSF and they confirmed the one they'd send was correct for my car. I then rang VW, who quoted me a different part no. to the one on my dead fan…so I rang GSF back and they don't do a replacement part for that number…..ggrrrrrr!!!!Can anyone shed any light on what the heck's going on under my bonnet?! I have all the part numbers listed below…thank you so much for any help you can give me to clear the mud!!
  • Current fan (AEG)- 191959455AA
  • VW quoted fan (AEG) - 191959465A
  • 2 female socket connector - 191972525A

3 choices!
1. change the rad fan loom and switch for a 2 speed one to match your fan
2. get the 3 pin plug that fits and splice the fast speed to your old 2 speed wiring leaving the slow speed off
3. get a 1 speed fan from a 16v or a low spec mk1/2 (edit: 1 speed not 2, oops)

the tricky thign is there are several fan plugs around so you'll need to make sure the one you have matches up to the fan

Sorry just I clear things up I'm guessing my car had a 2 pin setup then the previous owner changed the entire loom which everything works appart from the fan due to the new plug been a 3 socked female plug and my rad has a 2 pin switch in so with a 3 pin switch in my rad everything should work ???? Thanks

In the end I took car into the garage and they wired it up for me...good job too as the rad switch(sensor?) was corroded so they had to replace that anyway!

Hey all - Having the EXACT same problem here !! : (

My 2 pin fan has died and I need a shiny new one, but they are all 3 pin.

I'm not to technically minded so I could really benefit from a walk through. Been on the phone to VW Heritage who advised to get hold of:

1H0906233 (One on eBay currently)
357972742/A
357972742/B

I am desperate to get a working fan as being stuck in traffic for more than 5 minutes results in having to turn around or switch engine off. Any help would be massively appreciated…

Pictures would be even better : )

Thank you rubjonny.

I bought a second hand fan from eBay for £20 (3 pin) // Cut my current connector and fitted 2 x new spade plugs and wired to the 2 outer pins. For the time being this is doing the trick.

Don't suppose you could point me in the right direction for the parts you mentioned? As you know mate I'm pants at this! - Will this be a job for an auto electrician / Garage?

Mine is off to the garage Monday to have new pump, cambelt, clutch bulkhead plate and new clutch cable fitted  :)

trouble is vw changed the fan plug a few times on the mk2, so its a case of trawl about the place for a plug that fits your fan.  the good thing about mk2 looms is they disconnect at a 2 pin spade plug on the side of the fan so you can then just crimp new spades on your odl live and earth wires to the fan and plug the mk2 loom in. if you get proper non-insulated latched spades you can get the proper connector housing on there as well.

with the 3 pin thermoswitch its a standard part used across the VW range from early 80s to early 90s so easily available, AVS do them:

Thanks Rubjonny,

Decided to park this until the new year now. The fitting of the pump and other parts cost a little more than is hoped.

Need to put some money to one side for;

New battery
New alternator
New starter motor

Then will come back to this as my temporary solution seems to be holding out for now.
