Engine running at high rpm on tick over. Choke problem?????

Post

Hi,

I am coming to the end of completing the restoration on my 1.6 Cabby. However, before I started the resto it had an issue with revving high. After removing the engine for
the bodywork/welding/painting, I have refitted it and I have been reminded of this problem!!!

I beleive the issue is with the automatic choke? It revs to about 2500 rpm and stays there.

I was wondering if anyone know's if this is a comman problem and whether there is an easy component replacement I can carryout to fix it?

Thanks in advance.

Jay.

Have you checked all the vac pipes on the carb as this Is very important on the pieburgs carbs and there auto choke

Other than changing for a Weber I'm not sure you can get the auto choke parts for them any more

Just had a look on ebay, there are plenty of kits to service a 2e2 carb plus a pulldown unit, I assume fitted to your 1.6.

I agree with the advice above, personal experience with a Golf Mk1 & 2 has always shown that deteriorating vacuum tubing and pull-down unit over time are a cause of many engine running problems.

I have recently overhauled a IB3 for my 1500cc engine and the associated vacuum system. See page 7 of my blog. Contamination is also an issue.

The Mk2 link is cracking, I wish I had that at my side when working on my previous Mk2.
