Noisy gearbox

So whilst I've got my Campaign on the road and historic road tax, running it is a good feeling after 8 years in bits - some jobs to do yet but annoyingly the gearbox is noisy.

When the clutch is depressed it goes quiet so defo gearbox whine.

Could it be the release bearing ? I've replaced it but may have got it wrong ??🤷🏼‍♂️ that would be the easy solution to replace…. 

If not think I'll have get a recon unit and get it fitted. 

It's certainly fought me every step this Golf

4 or 5 speed?

TJ was my Automatic.  

Have you changed the Gear LUBE. If you have a 5speed the 5th gear is splash driven, so if the fluid level is low, you can burn out the 5th gear.

It's 5 speed manual.

It's also leaking gearbox fluid out of speedo cable location" despite new gasket and fixing bolt being tight ? 🤷🏼‍♂️
