stripping matt paint off original finish?

i have a mk1 jetta which im working on which was the lovely colour that is gambia red (maroon) but the previous owner has very shabbily painted it matt black with rattle cans...... what im curious about is, is there some way of stripping the matt black off the original paint without destroying and stripping the whole lot? thanks!

Wet sanding may be the only option, depends how thick the paint is on, but for me I'd wet sand until I saw body colour then polish it up.

The only risk is if they flatted the original colour to key for the black, the original paint could be thin in places.

I think whatever you do there will be an element of a 'leap of faith' whatever you do!

I'd use a cutting compound on a wool pad and work it over until I saw original paint. 

Then refine whatever is left with a good finishing compound. 

Whats all this sudden replying to threads that are 4.5, 6, 7 years old, not bothered, just seems to have suddenly started.
