Wolfgang the Golf

I've owned  Wolfgang for about 9 years now. It was a 1.3 driver which I fiteed GTI running gear to.Its was a daily driver until the last of 3 gti engines died last year. I decided it was time for something a bit more powerful  :D  and to do all the little bodywork jobs I'd been meaning to do for ages.

I picked this up off ebay from a crashed mk3

I had to get a wiring diagram from autodata to sort out the loom but it was much easier than I was expecting and I've got it running reasonably well.

By the time i'd sold off all the leftover parts and ancilliaries from my 1.8 it almost paid for its self :D

I've been attacking the bodywork for the last few months and this is how the car looks now. It's had a new bonnet, N/S wing, all the holes in the tailgate welded up. I've still to fit the wheelarches on the rear.

The colour I finally chose is BMW Aspen Silver I haven't decided if I'll fit the BBS kit yet I was always planning to but I'm kinda liking the way it's beginning to look without it. I tinted the tail lights by mixing a tiny bit of black with some 2 pack laquer seemed to work quite well.

Off to the garage now to do a bit more :D

Very impressive so far! Have you been spraying it yourself then?

yep done all the work my self too tight to pay someone   had a hand from my friend Alan( cheers!) with the heavy lifting  :D

Thought I'd stick a bit in about the engine as most people I think are put off using the abf engine by the wiring. The engine loom is a bit of a night mare but if you peel back the tape most of the wires are for other things and dont go any where I removed all these ones.

I then yanked the original wiring loom through the bulkhead.

wrapped the ecu plug in tape and slipped the mk1 wiring grommet over it.

A cool thing about the mk3 engine loom is that all the wires for temp / oil sensors etc go through that big plug on the front of the engine so to keep things neat I chopped the mk1 engine loom plug off near the fuse box and soldered and heat shrunk the wires from the mk3 loom on there which made for quite a neat finish I think. luckily they were all the same colour on both looms.

I've covered it in tape since this photo. The 47 ohm ceramic resistor on the loom near the coil is to make the ECU think the carbon canister purge valve is still connected. I also taped some vacuum tubing in with the loom for the map sensor which is built into the ecu.

This just left a few relays to wire up for the ECU, Fuel pump and Lambda probe heater since i wasn't using the mk3 fuse box. I just made up the wiring as in the Auto data wiring diagram.

I'll tuck these up behind the dash along with the ecu.

Top work :D

Is there any difference in the wiring on early and late mk3's?

Handy how the wire colours matched.

Should be pretty rapid, for not a lot of money

Thanks!

My engine came from a 92 with the AB code ECU I Read later ones have a built in immobiliser so I'd imagine  the wiring would be a bit different.

still a few wiring issues to sort out the ecu wants a speed sensor input but I cant fit the sensor and the speedo cable in the gearbox at the same time.

also there are 2 wires that go to the instrument panel in the diagram but it doesn't say what they do. one is violet with a white stripe the other green with a white stripe
I assume one's for the rev counter and and the other is for a warning light?I'll stick something in the tech section.

Im sure you will sort it, you've got this far

Im been thinking about this conversion for my mk2 (90 spec), was told up until m reg, was non inmobliser, thinking off getting a donar, and stripping everything I need out. (Oh the rents will be happy lol!)
