Which engine conversion to go for?

Hello all! As its getting into winter, my twin 40 carbed 2.0 8v is playing up, it hates the cold. So I am considering ripping it all out and starting again. With such a choice of engine conversions being done, which one do I choose.
16v ? 2.0 16v plus turbo? G60? 1.8 20vt? Vr6?
It's good to have a stupid amount of power in a little golf, and I have enjoyed the weber sound for the last few years, but a little more user friendlyness would be nice.
It's said that the vr6 engines are a bit heavy up front, and the r32s a complete mare to find enough space in the bay.
Or do I go down the tfsi modern approach , because then it will be easier to find a good low mile engine.
Please let me know your thoughts, and which one you would love to have, state your reasons and pros and cons of all the options, many thanks and look forward to hearing from you all!

Sounds exciting. I did a quick google and i can't really find much in the way of Mk1s with the modern TFSI engines. However, i have heard they are excellent engines. I think the little 1.4 is even capable of 200+ kmph and thats an a heavy Audi A3. Despite being little resources of info for these conversions, i think it would be the most interesting engine conversion out of the ones you have listed.

Its going to be way more reliable than any other engine conversion due to having such fewer miles. Fuel economy will be a lot better too and these little engines are fast! In a mk1…seriously fast id expect with a honed setup.

I think it will be the most expensive option however. You'll need keys, loom, ecu, clock etc.

It would love to see it done. At the moment there just seems to be murmurs and ideas on doing this conversion. Break the mould :D
