Basically, your car needs a VIN number or you'll not get an MoT certificate. It doesn't need to be the stamped on one, although its obviously the best one, it could be the riveted on plate on the slam panel.
Don't forget to remove the heater fan and block up the hole, or else you'll have a leak if it rains (since you can't fit the plastic scuttle cover piece any more!!! ) Oh and you'll need to fit some kind of demister, I have no ideas how you'll achieve this; and will always need to open a window to get any ventilation/airflow. In fact, you might as well completely remove the heater matrix, since there will be no airflow over it it won't do anything. Basically unless you can sort out some other kind of ventilation, its going to turn the car into a summer only, or show only (or more accurately, dry/warm days only!) car.

I used to know a guy who'd taken a leaf out of mini books and run his cabby with an internal box out of something, with the air feed pipes into the inner wheel arch. just re-directed the piping around the new box.
As long as the box has cable operated flaps it'll work.

apparently an e30 cabriolet rear window demister does the job, or a z3…cant remeber which but apparently it does the job and means u can just blank the panel completely as it runs on electric heating up and element and not the water, you would be able to do away with some piping as well and weld another hole in the bulkhead.
Where does it draw fresh air in from, or does it simply heat up and recirculate the same air in the car over and over?

The grove that the bonnet sits in at the top of the bay catches the water and it drips round the side if you fill the 3 other holes with some silicon. no water leaks at all as long as u fill the vent in the bonnet aswell
the only slight issue is that when the cabin fan is on, its drawing air from inside the engine bay rather than the grilles in the bonnet so sometimes can draw some fumes in, but this is only realy a problem wen stopped

That's another worry, and one I didn't even mention! I think its more than a slight worry, basically if you have an engine fire the electric cable insulation burns and produces toxic fumes. This is the main reason why race cars have to have a firewall which isolates the engine bay from the interior. Obviously thats an extreme, but the same principles are all there in normal cars, and the fresh air ventilation intake is never in the engine bay of a normal car.

I've seen mini airvent feeds used in an inner wing with one pipe to draw air from the front to the inner wing and another to send the air from there to the blower inside the car.
the bmw box draws from the rear arches on the standard car iirc.

the bmw box can draw air from wherever you put the pipes.

I don't suppose you've seen the details of the install in a Mk1 Golf though? How thick is the pipe, where is it drawing the air from and where is it routed on a Mk1 Golf?

Basically, you cut a 9inch hole in the top of the inner wing, not sure which it was a while ago.
Then screwed the vent plate in with 4 screws. Really it's just a pipe with a flange to attach it to the car. the is the gasket http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/…ts_SM&hash=item5ad62f60d6
Then the pipe goes to the feed on the box, the water pipes obv go on. he used some pvc pipe parts to get it aligned etc and then he just attached the cables and wired the fan into the switch.
Not 100% on the full details. iirc he put the vent in the passenger arch and then moved the fusebox to gain some room. it wasn't a quick job and i'm sure using a different sized vent would stop you needing to do that.
I'll doodle a diagram up if needed to show how it worked.
