what im doing as my car is off the road

since the engine in my gti seized i was contemplating a 16vlv g60 which at the time was just too expensive so i thought mite aswel drop another 8vlv in.

bin strippin it down over the last few days this is how far i got.

pics not too good on the old phone ay it.

a good strip down de-grease wire brushed an painted.

then found out after skimming over the head that 1 of the water canals had corroded back to the valve. great. luckily got a spare.

more to come

bit more of an update got the engine and gearbox all fitted together dropped out the old engine from the bottom found it the easiest, while engine was out found out the drivers side cv boot was split an there was hardly any grease left. also found out the classic problem with mk1s the clutch cable had sawed through a part of the bulkhead so had to get a plate from good old GSF.

heres a few pics

Engine out.

popping the clutch on as the old clutch plate was nearly bald!

fitted the gearbox on the crane ready to go in.

had the wheel off to get to the cv boot managed to break a locking bolt ace!

but hang on whats this? hmm g60 and a g40? decisions decisions!

sadly they arnt mine! maybe one day!

engine going in from the bottom

had a few problems with getting it onto the mounts and the driveshafts in place!

got a few wiring problems atm reverse light wont work passanger side heaplamp wont come on and non of the gauges work in the center console! fun times

Looking good, looks a lot of work, i wish i had the tools.

Just asking,  why did you go in from the bottom is that the normal method or easier?  One day i may tackle something that ambitious  so it would be good to know the reason :D

So it will definitely be ready for GTI Inters? And you could take it down the 1/4 mile and break it again??

well all is in and wired up but refuses to start! ive got a spark and fuel is getting to the head but its not starting? ignition timing maybe?

any help would be apreciated

Yeah either ignition timing, spark plug leads on the wrong way (surprising how many times this happens!) or mixture is now well out. Statically set the timing to 0 deg, that will start you.
