Seen the light, I'm going standard

Hello guys i've come full circle on my mk1 restoration and decieded to restore to standard. The engine needs attetion and i was considering a full rebuild, its a 81' 1600 injection, 128,000 miles without any major work. I live in the Bexley, kent area and was going to approch san speed, has anyone used them or recommended them? I know big boys toys in lakeside essex, offer rebuilt engines fitted from around ?700 i think, has anyone had any experence with them?, if anyone can recomened a garage i don't mind travelling.
What should i expect a garage to quote me on such a job?
any help is much appreciated, also if anyone has any parts like a recondition head etc.. for sale then i would of course be interested.
thanks again Gurv.

whats wrong with the engine?

i doubt if BBT will do 1600 gti lumps, but then they may do.

Think Big Boys Toys still use Volkspares for their exchange engines. You can go directly to Volkspares and save ?50-100. Have heard mixed reports of Volkspares engines and service. Had a clutch done by them oncr and they failed to reconnect the reversing lights switch. Not major, but what else did they leave unconnected 8O .

Whats wrong with the engine? Most GTI lumps should see 200000 miles with care and regular servicing. My 1600 has 213000 on its original engine

1981 1600 GTI (coming to a road near you soon…)

1983 1100 C

thanks guys, it sounds very tappety and im pretty sure the head gasket is on its way out. I was just thinking it might have worked out cheaper in the long run to have the engine rebuilt?

All mk1's are tapety on start up, does it disapear after a run?

also head gasket is not a hard job to do especialy if you do it before it goes.
