S2 GTI out of hibernation

Evening all,

Got the Mk1 out this weekend after having it sat in the garage for the winter. Gave it a clean and made sure it has at least a good chance of passing an MOT. I'll maybe book a Friday off work so that I have some time to make some changes and go for a retest if I need to.

I don't know why but I get paranoid about every single MOT no matter what car.

Anyway enough of my waffling and some pics for you:

and the engine bay…

Enthusiastic polishing has created a need for stickers

Looking good  - though for perfection/completeness I'd add the red grille surround. I know how tricky they are to get though!

I know how you feel about MoTs - I get that very same feeling. Partly because my car is a rebuilt wreck.

Haha, yeah stickers came off with the polisher because they'd been put on with bubbles in and then baked in the sun at some point to go crispy. VWTurbo does sticker sets and I bought a Passat off a guy recently who used to own Mk1s who gave me an original reel of tape for the tailgate which I don't have.

Bert you are an MOT tester arn't you? When are you starting the Mk1 MOT to order service then?? ?100 a time should cover the risk shouldn't it?

I've been half heartedly looking for a red grill, a decent set of 9 spokes and the correct lights for a while but the problem is that I like it too much as it is. I suppose it would be better for me to get hold of them now for if I look to sell it at any point but then I'd be worrying about interior (it's got upholstery from a Lhasa car) and suspension hight.

Best get that front spoiler on too.

Can't you create a "temporary" network issue, then do an MoT and type it all in later?

I know that VOSA do "mystery shopper" tests where they pose as the average motorist with a car, which has had a couple of faults introduced onto it. Apparently they are cunning experts at not looking like VOSA engineers who are trying to look like the average customer.

It would be interesting to know how much flexibility there is with VOSA, for example if you accidentally let slip a fault or two through - or failed a passable car on something you didn't like the look of. I've had the same car pass something 2nd year through the test (at the same place, by the same guy) which picked up an advisory first time round - and I hadn't done anything to it so it couldn't have been any better, only worse! (It was corrosion on a brake pipe).

yeah my missus has provisonally just bought a clio off her cousin, its mot is due tomorrow and he thinks it will sail through cause its got 46k on the clock! i drove it around the block on sat and it is the worst car i have ever driven! the steering is light and then heavy when you get on about half lock, there is def a wheel bearing needs doing, the two front tyres are shot, and both front seatbelts dont retract! its a shed and i told her to tell him to shove it up his bum when the testing centre laughs at it. my pushbike has more chance of passing an mot than that piece of crap.
