Restoring '83 1800 GTI, steering rack + brake conversion

Hi all!

I am quit new to this forum.
I am Belgian, so excuse me for my bad English, I'll give it my best shot.

I own a '83 1800 GTI since 12 years now. I drove it for about 5 years and had it in the garage since then. Now at last starting the restoration project !! :) .

I want all details sand blasted en restored in the very last detail.
So now I was dismantling the steering rack, and the things that are connected to it. Unfortunately I cannot seem to find someone who has done this before and posted some pics on this subject. Is there anybody that can give me advice?
Also I want to change all the bushes with Powerflex ones. Has it got anny use to upgrade the bushes where the steering rack is connected with to the chassis?

My second subject is on upgrading the brakes.
I read the tread in archive on braking matters, very interesting indeed!
What I am going to do is:
Leave the rear drum brakes to stock (although disks look greater I think …).
Upgrade the front disk to perforated ones.
Put in a MK2 Servo combination. And here comes the question. Some of you guys pick this up from a scrapyard. But isn't the chance there that the Servo is worn out? Shouldn't this be bought new?

Manny thanks in advance for your replies!
sure these won't be my last questions

As soon as I got pictures I will put them online!

I believe you asked Mars Red LA2A?

Rack get new genuines best but gsf ones are fine be already painted dont forget new track rods and ends! cheap enough

Brakes rear drums are fine if refurbed again cheap enough see my thread below!

yes you can do a mk2 16v servo and master cylinder upgrade cheap and easily enough

second hand servos not a problem if it did go brakes still work just have to press harder so wont be dangerous!

master cylinder this is the actual hydraulic bit that pushes the fluid if this goes your in trouble (handbrake only left)
so buy thsi new again genuines greta but gsf parts are normaly ok

ERROR: A link was posted here (img) but it appears to be a broken link.
