Recommissioning a Garage Find
I've got the opportunity to get hold of a one owner 82 Golf LS which has been sitting in a garage for 10yrs!
Is there anybody out there who could suggest a process of things I would need to do to get the car a. running b. on the road.
I'm making the assumption the car was laid up because the owner was elderly not because it was a non runner.
I'm probably the worst person to be tackling this as I have little or no mechanical knowledge - but hey you've got to start somewhere!
I believe I've got the correct Haynes manual so I'm just looking for an list of what I should tackle and in what order.
If you can help - assume you are dealing with a complete novice (no techno terms or abbrevs) - it will just save me having to contact you all again to ask stupid questions.
If the car turns out to be a complete wreck (only seen a photo of it in the garage)- I'll pick it up anyway and strip the parts - I'm sure there will be someone out there who'll be greatful of the bits!
Thanks
Phill

petrol tank filler neck and filler area, sills, floorpans, inner wings, front and rear panels and the most obvious arches….
if it is an LS, then i think that makes it a small light model i.e. pre 1981, if it is an 82 then it will be worth slightly less, although could be a very worthwhile project
i would say that you shoudl check over the whole car first before you spend money on any one area i.e a friend of mine spent hundreds minting up the engine bay of a mk1 passat only to find he cud get his arm trhough the sill, so just be careful before throwing cash at it
hope that helps

Its all a bit of a pain really - the car has been offered to us free, but we're in Oxfordshire and the car is in Humberside!
I'm committed to picking it up as I don't want to make two journey's - I thought even if its a wreck we may be able to rob enough bits off it to pay for the diesel and it may do somebody in the club a good turn!
