Racing Golf GTI Mk1.

Hi,

I will be racing my Mk1 GTI in the V.A.G. Trophy this year and, as a long time Mk1 enthusiast (I originally raced a Mk1 GTI in the Slick 50 Championship in 1995 !), thought some on this forum might be interested.

I've owned the car (originally a 1.6) since 1999 and in that time it's had various incarnations and has been a 1.8, 2.0 and now a 1.9 ! (all 8V). The brief spec is as follows :

Engine - balanced and decked 1.9 bottom end with KS pistons, race specification head running a 300 degree cam via Cosworth buckets - 11:1 CR. Twin Weber 45 carburettors. Custom inlet manifold and 4 into 1 exhauist manold, Tony Law exhaust.

Suspension / wheels - Poly bushed with re-valved AVO coilovers - uprated (very!) springs and geometry. 15 inch OZ wheels with Toyo 888 tyres.

Brakes - 280 mm front disc conversion / rear discs, 16V Mk2 servo, Goodrich hoses etc.

Overall interior stripped, weld in 6 point cage and all the usual race accessories.

I'm just starting to prepare it for the 2010 season (only 4 weeks to go !) and will post a few shots ' as is' if someone can tell me how  :redfaced:  - I keep getting an error message.

I'll let you know how I get on over the coming weeks too.

Regards,

John.

Hi Jim,

Many thanks for your offer - I may well take you up on it !.

I'm also involved in organising the race series and it would be great to see some more Mk1s out there (there have been approaches from some ex Slick 50 cars - does anyone know where they all are ?. I'd be particularly keen to learn the fate of DJO 931 Y my old racer).

I'm Castle Donington based and will certainly come along to one of the regional meetings - I've a very early Mk1 GTI too, which will be a rolling restoration I'll bring along.

The race dates are :

May 23rd Brands Hatch GP.
June 19th Castle Combe.
August 21st Cadwell Park.
September 11th Oulton Park.
October 1st Silverstone GP.
August 30th Snetterton.

Regards,

John.

Hi,

Many thanks for the responses. comments follows :

mk1jim : please let me know when (and where) the Derbyshire meet is - I'd be happy to attend and possibly provide free passes to some of the members.

James_W : sorry for the delay -I tend to work stupid hours on the day job sadly. can you help with starting a database of ex- Slick 50 racers ?; there were (in my estimation) around 50 Mk1 GTIs converted and who knows where they are now ?. My opinion (again) is that you are very good at research……excellent !.

ebo - sounds like you are developing a car which could be quick - PM me if you need more information on how to go racing.

Kind regards,

John.

John the best person to ask about ex slick 50 cars is going to be Chris Eyre, I bet he will know where a lot of them are.

Hi Crazynick,

The Tony Law exhaust seems to work well, but was pretty expensive (around £800 for manifold and system a few years ago).

There are a few other options for power - BTB and Saxon Motorsport do systems which work very well on Mk2 GTIs, they may be worth contacting on the Mk1 too.

John.

Hi James,

Excellent work - great to hear that it's still around !.

We developed it from a £600 auction car into a top 6 car in the Slick 50 and I actually lead the last race I did in it @ Mallory until being knocked off into the barriers by the guy in second place on the penultimate lap. Not too much damage thankfully !.

The car was repaired and sold to a chap called Shoesmith from Mayfield in 1998 I think.

It's probably incredibly cheeky, but could you check another couple of my old Mk1s :

DTV 474 T - my first Mk1 and one of the very first RHD cars imported.
LGT 386 Y - Oettinger 2000E conversion from new, with all the right bits but standard looking except 15 inch Pirelli 'P' wheels - why did I sell it ?!!.

If there's a cost involved please let me know and I'll reimburse you.

Regards,

John.

Not really someone might have one in a private collection or one might be a barn find waiting to happen.

Odds are that they are both gone but there is always hope that they might be found somewhere.

I read that if a result comes up after typing in the details then its not scrapped even if the date of liability is 89 or something. Its only when the car isnt recognised by the system it means its dead. Dont quote me on it though…even though I just quoted the person who said this

Thanks for all the responses !.

I'll look into this issue in more detail and post up the 'official' version from the DVLA - probably useful to quite a few on this forum.

Kind regards,

John.
