Project LazyBam 20VT bolted up now

Hey guys

Just thought I'd stick up a post of my project Mk1:

Got it in December 2006, done a swap for it with my Mk2 Jetta GTI with a guy I knew in Kent, here's the Jetta:

Me, my wee bro, and my mate took down the Jetta and brought the Mk1 back in a day, was a fair old trek!

Anyway, as I got it:

Was told the spec was:
2.0 8v TSR Block
Flat planned crank
Lightened & balanced flywheel and crank,
ARP bolts
Honed con rods
Racing spec main and big end shells,
Diesel sump that holds and extra litre of oil
Windage tray and baffled sump
Kent gs3 cam
Ported and flowed head
Vernier pulley
Port matched inlet and exhaust manifolds
45mm Weber DCOE carbs
FK coilovers with koni inserts and fully poly bushed.

I was told it was around 180bhp, and that it was built by a reputable engine builder who is just beside Silverstone race track (and who supposedly builds some race car engines)

The Jetta & the Golf in Kent:

And at a rolling road day at Star Performance in Kirkcaldy, the Mk1 made:

133bhp @ 7430rpm
111lb/ft @ 4860rpm

A little down about this, but after finding out it was the 1.8, it's in the kinda ball park we were expecting.

Heres the vid of it on the rollers:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wft_fTkt1ys

It may not have huge figures, but this car bloody shifts, stays toe to toe with my mates 191bhp Clio Cup.

And some pics my bro took in the garden:

I as due to do a track day in the car, so was giving the car a good service and just decided to do a compression test on the engine and the results were:

100-100-180-180

So, thinking the head gasket was gone to give such a difference in compression, I whipped the head off, but found the HG was fine.

Poured petrol into number 1 & 2 cylinders and the fuel goes away :( So the bottom end is gubbed, and had been for a while.

While it was off, I checked the carbs, and they were gubbed too :(

Then took the sump off, and there was metal in there :(

So all in all, the engine was buggered.

So I sourced a new engine, and I gave it a full rebuild:

After this, I done a track day at the local sprint track (Kames):

Recently, I got a 20vT BAM engine, and I've started converting it over, no pics of the 20vT conversion yet, but I'll keep you all updated as I go, and I'll be picking your brains if I've got any questions :D

Sorry to hear your problems mate but i'm not sorry to hear what your going to do about it… 20vt is a right machine!!!  Get in there!!

Hope to see this build thread progressing mate!!!  What did it do on the track then?  Did it go well?  You glad you swapped to the quick and nible wee mk1 even with the unstated problems?

Where are you from in Scotland… is it Fife like on the bhp print out?  They're holding a Scotland meet you may want to check out the regional meet thread mate

Thanks for the reply mate and YES im happy with the mk1, on track the
car went really well, the only prob i had was with the motorway
driving as it revved it head off, which was noisey  , but to be honest the only reason i want more power is i built a mk2 Fiesta XR2 8O  for my bro
with a 16v zetec webber TB's and alpha managment  (200bhp), and on the long straight at Knockhill up here he just pulls away from me  , so ive come up with the plan of the 20 VT Bam for some more than the
old FORD :D

P.S.   i do miss my Jetta tho :(  (will get another but a mk1 this time  )

You're bound to miss a motor that looks like that and when you've put effort into it… I still miss old bangers I got rid of but the mk1 is just so nimble and you can throw it about… nice daily driver or track car.. jumps straight from one to the other!!  Sure she'll make up for you selling the jetta when you drop that 20vt in there!!!

Sounds like your a bit of a petrol head bud!!!

well we will come to that when the time come's, but i want to use
MegaSquirt as it looks the best option and for the price
toyotec will do you a kit, then all you have to MAP it, ill give it a go

I want it all done to be down the quarter at GTi international in
the summer  :D

nice work mate get that 20vt running what mangement you going to run ?

if you get stuck with anything give me a shout where you located

thanks guy's im getting there slow but sure :D , the engine has done
just under 60K, ive made my engine mount and doing the box ones to
day. as for managment wasgoing to go OE, but reading up on the
megasquirt stuff, and you offering support then im going for the megasquirt.
here's one for you Ben, would any of the MAP's you have been done for
a BAM running the K04-023, also i need injectors and unsure what one's
are ment to be used?  illget somemore pics up when i get a chance 8)

And im from Glasgow :D

Post

my map will get it running with basic setting but the fueling would be out due to the BAM lump being bigger bhp

if your interested in the megasquirt email

toyotec@hotmail.com

hes builds the units he may have a BAM map but im not sure

problem withthe oem ecu is theres so many things to go wrong ie maf, coilpacks, ect so going standalone gets rid of most of the crap not needed

Hey Ben already PM'd toyotec, But yes thats what i had been thinking
about was the fact the Bam has the K04 and 9:1comp ratio, that it would
get it running then set the Map from there, also you say about the maf?

ive read that you bin the maf and use MAPsensor and  bin the COP packs, so then we use the Pug 306 coil and leads, could we use ford Zetec as thats 30-1 already?

also what size injectors are you's running and Boost?  Im wanting in the
reg of 250bhp

 :D

Post

a Bam enging with standard injectors and k04 will hit 250bhp no problems 8)  with just a good mapping session

i recently built one for a guy using emerald and it hit 260bhp on the rollers with some still to give

i use the 306 coilpack with the engine 60-2 vr sensor on the crank so no need to use the zetec stuff i found 16v mk2 plug leads fit very well on the pack

the maf goes in the bin as you dont want that causing you grief

can i direct you here as i have a tech article for said conversion
fastgolf.org.uk

a k04 turbo will go a good 1.5 bar of boost i run 1 bar at 200bhp and its fun so 1.5 bar will make it an animal

Post

Thanks for your replys mate, thats good to hear, did you find the
emerald "WAS" any better then the Megasquirt?  and the 306 coil pack with
the 16v leads thats good to know for that. As for the rest is it just standard
sensors it uses?

But thats enough bursting your head for now   cheer's Ben

and just to let you guys know thats my mounts all tacked up,
ready to be taken off to be fully welded :D  :D  :D,pics soon.
Then on to the cooling system, What are you guys doing for a radiator fan?

And just when i think of it i made my shafts up today too :D , used
16v corrado shafts and my 8v outer CV's, seems to work a treat.
Thats the 100mm inner CV's sorted formy 02A box. Every thing
went right for a change

The shafts are the very chappy mate! Made for the job!

The engine in the bay all lined up with the shafts in:

And the beginnings of the gearbox mount:

Mick's gearbox mount made up (I'm going to make up a CAD drawing for this, so we can make them from scratch :D )

And then in place:

And I forgot to get a pic of this earlier, the drivers side engine mount:
