project 2, new from cornwall

hi, im almost 20 from cornwall, st.austell area
always loved golfs and own a mk4 1.4 as my daily,

i've now just brought a cc model 1.8 gti white cabriolet for a steal of £521
which is a good price seeing as it runs and is in ok condition, and the cc's are pretty rare if i'm right.

this is where my project begins which im planning to do over this winter to try and get it ready for next summer.
the priorities at the moment are:
a new hood
full respray
new interior - reupholster seats/trim

then move onto engine and other modifications such as wheels, brakes, suspension and sound system.
i'm planning on keeping it classy and not cutting corners or making it chavy

unfortunately most of the interior is faded and the hood is shot with loades of shoddy repairs, so the special cc hood and seats have to go.

gave her a nice gut and clean. also first little mod of removing the lower centre console,
i'm in the process of making a new gear stick and handbrake cover

think i've covered what i want to say, any comments welcome

here's some pics to get you going, enjoy!

Hi Buddy welcome to the forum and make sure you check out the link on top left for coming a paid member for only £15 a year, from that you can save hundreads in the discount you can then get on parts and insurance from out partners.

Be good to see you sunday for the Show myself and Scott (arf333) are arranging.

A guy is going to be there called Stuart who also has a CC which has been in his family for years, he has just managed to source a CC interior for his and he does have his old interior and some old door cars and bits and bobs etc, so you might be interested in some of the bits he has

Yep is a shame you cant source the CC embosed hoods any more but alot of people tend to go for a blue mohair hood as the replacement

See you sunday buddy

so haven't managed to start any work yet, but have had a few quites for bodywork and interior. this was mainly due to me not having room at home and my dad not wanting car parts all over the place.

however things have changed and ive found a double garage for rent near by for £1500 pa. which means i can do the work and save loads of labour costs.

so thats the new plan.

starting tomorrow i'm road tripping around the uk in my mkiv, when im back hopefully work begins :)

so im back, had a look at the garage, which turned out to be a 1000sq/f workshop(too big). and the £1500 rent tripled when there was a £3000 licensing fee and other costs. so thats at least £5000 a year without making it usable or paying for tools.

so im not getting that place anymore as it is too much, but i am using my grans garage. not alot of room but the best i can get at the moment.

back to preparing for my car now, i've spent the last few hours reading this whole article which is very hepful http://www.thebugshop.org/bsfqpnt.htm
,and looking at other sources to help me get to grips with respraying my car. fortunately my dad when he was my age rebuilt his mgb in the same garage so its like going back in time for my golf.

hopefully i will start work soon but cant put a date on it yet, but cant wait to start

new garage sorted, started emptying it out today in the lovely sunshine. there is a lot of crap in there and its some dusty.

also got myself a 50l air compressor new but exdisplay so got for a bargain(ish) of £120 with a spray and tyre gun thrown in, pleased with that.

when i was clearing it out i also found a fair sized inspection hole, which was a welcomed bonus minus the spiders

another white cab! love it.that one you have there is almost identical to the one i had my first ride in when i was 6.twas during the 80's and my ol fellas buddy had one, this was during the time you could not park a gti or 3i up without it going walkies lol.said buddy went on holls for a week and told the ol man to use it rather than let it sit parked! the reason i love vw is that car right there.

Hey arf333, yeah finally getting somewhere now I have money. I'm on a multicar policy with my parents but I still get my own no claims (2 years and counting). the mk1 is currently on a monthly insurance, it costs me £55 a month when I need it, so mainly summer months and its insured now as I'm driving it to the workshop for a new hood and leather interior,

After giving my car a full body scrub, I left te engine running as its been sat in a garage for a while, unfortunately something was wrong with the thermostat/cooling system and… Boom my hose down into the water pump literally exploded and covered my lovely clean car in rusty dirty water

You can't beat a good helper  :)

I'm down in Cornwall too, Camborne so not far away and working on a cabby. If you need a hand with heavy bits give me a yell.

Garage looks good. Did you manage to get new benches installed?

Hi, yeah got a bench running along the back now, but there's holes in the roof and the back window is pretty much fallen out so everything get soaked, can't wait til it's dry weather. I'm gonna be driving it soon, after I've got the hood done and new leathers. Ill have to come down for a meet soon, quite a few of you down camborne way. Next year depending on money I may completely overhaul it, so a hand getting the engine out will be required if you feel up for it.
