Preserving the fuel tank

I have recently bought a new fuel tank from vw (dont even ask how much they are!   ) its a part that i realy dont want to replace again or have rust issues so how does this sound, strip the paint from the outside and apply several coats of high content zinc primer, a coat of the rubbery vw underseal to the underside and over the tank seems then a few coats of black over that, also considering using the frost kit on the inside does anyone have experience of this stuff? will it flake off over time and cause more trouble than its worth? i know all this sound over the top but im getting the car to as new (maybe a little better ;) ) and plan to keep it forever realy :D

as long as the underseal is kept good and doesnt go thin i reckon it should be ok after a few coats of zinc paint…

did u get those fuel pump casings made up in the end??

I personnaly wouldn't do the frost kit thing for the inside. Wouldn't have thought tanks rust from the inside if the car is used regularly. Filling the tank and driving would surely slosh off any condensation that might collect inside.

I think the tank resto kit is only for tanks that are already rustly or have a load of crap inside that you cant get out. I have a BSA Bantam that I put back on the road last year after 34 years off the road! Its tank had fuel left in it for most of this time and the oil/petrol mix went mank and stuck to the bottom, and a bit of rust has formed in the tank too. I havent used the bike much yet but when I do I'll use this stuff on it.

I wouldn't put it in a new tank also because you just dont know how long it will be ok for before it possibly breaks up, you might have to reseal it again or something?

Its used on a regular basis, sometimes not daily but every other day, think i may leave the inside then, can always do that in say 5 or 10 years if i see a problem, fuel pump casing havent forgotten just havent had time and wont until this gtx has gone so end of the month :D
