Now rebuild 2. going ABF, wheels and interior changes+++++more pics inside

Hey,
Stuck a thread in the newbie section today but its gonna need a build thread really. Pics show how it is now. Got it yesterday and its in need of some "de-chavving" as I call it  :)

Got the coilies on order as its been lowered on cut springs. Its running an abf which ticks over sweet as you like but drives terribly. Im guessing its down to the fact it was sitting for 5 years and has shite fuel in it. Biggest exhaust you've ever seen…5" at least!  Clipper front and rear bumpers have been rather poorly fitted and them tints have got to go! Its delocked on the tailgate and passenger door and has a single wiper conversion. Inside has no rear bench but does have very good black leather up front.
Got the Vdo gauges but not wied in and has the full MFA clocks and stalk. However I dont know how these are wired up or how they wire up!

What I know is tints are going, Zender rear spoiler is going, ride height is coming up a bit and the drums/calipers back to nice conservitive black!

Needs tlc!  Single wiper only works on the max stalk position but its very slow?? Is this the wiring or motor? is it the same motor in these as a standard set up?

Anyway im bound to find a 100 gremlins so there will be questions as time goes on.
Pics:

My big dilema is do i put a full proper clipper kit on or standard black bumpers and maybe colour code them? Cant do chrome as not got funds
Your thoughts and ideas most welcome…and aprpreciated  :)

Work starts this sunday so will up date with pics and vids.

I saw this on the bay. Considered buying it to chop up for panels lol. Please don't use the doors he was advertising them with. With the audi handles. lol

And pull those tints off before you get fined. lol

I would stick standard black bumpers on and black arch trims

thanks for the interest.
I didnt get the doors off him…wasnt interested in them.  Took a gamble by not going to see it but turns out everythings there, everything works just not at 100%. So it should be an easy enough little project. My mate will be helping me. He's an ex porsche mechanic that now works for ECP so I get the best of both worlds…cheap parts and someone to fit them.  :) Pics of him will follow and his VR6 which is really nicely modded to follow.

Its gonna be my daily within the next month or 2!

And yep…….black arch trims and small black bumpers but think i'll put the smaller chin spoiler rather than duck bill as the speed bumps round here are horrendous!

Here's a pic of my drive at the mo……mk1 Golf out front, 6n2 Polo Gti which is the gf's, Mk4 Gti 1.820vt and my Caddy looking sorry for itself way up the back. Looking like a VW forecourt! Gf's saving up for a Mk5 Gti. So after this one I will be on the lookout for a nice mk3 and Mk2. When I get the money a Mk6. :)

More update Monday night after ive been able to spend some daylight time on it.

Quick update after managing to spend some daylight on it!

Hey a few pics of just general tidying up. Managed to get everything working bar front washers, front wiper and seats fixed in properly. Seeing as im a complete newb and amatuer with only limited knowledge and some basic common sense im rather chuffed. Never trsted the continuity of anything before so when I read"a how to" and the got rear wiper and rear washer working….by tracing back until i found the break i thought…go me! lol

The fan has been bypassed and wired to a switch in the dash so gotta get that sorted. Airbox doesnt actually exist!!! so need to sort that also and seats?!?!?! well i shall be putting that question in the tech threads as im baffled! lol

First pics of stripping it out:

Founds these front and rear and promptly threw in the bin!!

Found lots of mouse poo and got a little worried about wiring….luckily the mice have moved out and left wiring in tact!

Started putting things back together all nicely cleaned up (if anyone has an old rear bench pm me!)

No airbox at all….need to soucrce one!

But chuffed that i got some bits sorted…..still feels like an endless list before MOT time. Coilies here hopefully to fit next weekend, then brakes, then exhaust…then MOT time!
Will keep it updated!

I thought this was an ABF? Why is it running k jet? And I dont think any air box will fit in the engine bay because of the chassis leg and most people just cut a hole in them.

So this is not an ABF?? Shows my in experience. Guy I bought it from said it was a mk3 gti ABF. So whats a k jet? Mk2 engine?

Also…..is that metering head?? I think thats what its called…..can that be romoved from the top of the plastic and re-located? then i could put a cone filter of some sort on?

Otherwise your saying i got to cut the chassis leg?? That doesnt sound right.  :dontknow:

Nice project… Liking those leather front seats mate!

Have you looked on eBay? Those undercar neon lights you've thrown sell for a small fortune… Some boy racer out there will buy them for his corsa I'm sure!

Good luck with the project… Once it's de-chavved it'll look cool!

Its possible that it might be an abf engine with the mk2 golf 16v manifolds and alternator and alternator bracket on I guess.

K jet is the mechanical fuel injection that you have there. And yeah what you have photographed is the metering head.

Don't think people normally put cone filters on them. Has it got a normal filter in there? Like i said people normally have the bottom half of the filter hosing and chop it up to go around the chassis leg so it still holds the filter. (I think the filter sandwiches between the 2 plastic halfs.) Doesn't look like its secured either. looks like its been rubbing on the alternator pulley.

Normally on a mk1 the metering head is on the other side of the engine bay and it has a bracket on that side. But you will need scirocco 16v inlet manifolds to have the throttle body on the correct side to relocate it there. And they are rare.

thanks for the reply. It has been rubbing at some point and has no filter at all in it. So i guess i need the bottom half and do some modding to it. So i need a mk2 airbox then? any other models i can use?

Can the metering head be split and relocated or is it an air flow thing?

Thanks again for the info.

Yeah just buy a bottom half and cut it to fit. Then you can have a filter. Mk2 golf will be your best bet.

The air needs to flow through it. It mechanically regulates how much fuel is injected from air flow.
Not really sure what you mean by split. But probably not.

cheers fella. Dont worry about the "split" youve answered my question. Just had a look on ebay and cant find a 16v mk2 airbox plenty of 8v but it looks different. I assume due to a different injection system. Will put a thread in wanted.

Thanks for the help…….dam sure theres gonna be a load more q's to follow. lol.

No worries. No sure if the 8v ones are the same. Could ask for measurements of the opening because that's the only bit you will need anyway.

Use mk1 gti airbox. The mk2 metering head will bolt straight on it. The mk1 box is smaller so will look much neater down behind the drivers side headlight. You'll just need to plumb in the crank breather hose if your not planning on fitting an oil catch tank.

use a pre-90 mk2 16v airbox, it will fit as its narrow enough and has all the correct outlets for a 16v engine. you have to cut the bottom of it off to make it sit low enough though. see my cabby build thread :)

need better pics of engine to see what else is going on there. a givaway that its an abf is the crank sensor, you'll find it way down the bottom of the block next to the gearbox, under the front engine mount/filter housing

And it will say ABF just above the oil breather on the block. lol.

You dont need to cut the bottom off a mk1 airbox. Just a slot going lengthways so the chassis leg join sits within it

Cut the tube out of a bulbous mk2 box

Then glue into mk1 box
