nose dive - rebuild 16v - Update page4 - now painted.

After all the trouble i've had over the last few months with the fuel starvation problem (see 'chugging chugging no go' thread), the golf was finally running ok after replacing the entire fuel system.

My girlfriend was out one day on the weekend and unfortunately veered off the road, through a hedge, through a barbed wire fence, hitting a post and doing a dukes of hazard stylee jump into a field of a 3 foot embankment.

the damage caused has:

Bent the front wishbone, steering rod, ARB, wing and very bottom of front panel. Snapped and bumped the clipper kit.

So now it's time for a bit of a rebuild.

The story so far…

ok a few pics.

the night we got it…

then we needed a new tank and fuel system as it was hopping about all over the place. also needed new rear shocks as the bold was seized.

Refurbed the rear beam and brakes..

just in time for bristol Volksfest…

then it happened…

So the repairs start…

the kit comes off…

the crunched wing comes off…

The damged bits removed

Compare the old (bent) and new wishbones and track arm..

and this is me, incase any of you recognise me!! -

and that is where we are now!

Just got some new brake discs and another wishbone for the other side. and a guy on another forum http://httuning.10.forumer.com/index.php has kindly donated a new ARB.

plans are to weld up the door handles, smooth out the swage line and all the trim holes, chrome rear bumper, de bumpered front and a respray, deep dish alloys of some kind and a coilover kit. and of course there is the colour change respray!

That is some bend on that steering arm ! Pleased no one was hurt .

Dogs not very impressed

thanks - no one was hurt but the dog wasn't too impressed with my girlfriend for a few days as she was in the car when it landed in the field. But the dog (tonka) wasn't wearing her seatbelt!

so - all i need to do now is clear my garage of my mates possessions (he's left all his stuff in there while he finds a new flat!!!) and i can get to work!.

will be keeping you up to date with progress.

Have a decent wing and clipper kit bits if you need them?

Also dont smooth the swage line, you will regret it!! also its a pig and a half to get it right.

But its up to you, each to there own and all that!

I was in two minds about the swage lines.

I'm thinking about chrome side strips or just filling in the holes in.

thanks for the advise though!

funk-star - i'm selling my clipper kit but how much would you want for the front passenger side clipper arch?

and how much for the wing?? is it new or a used original VAG?

Where are you based?

update - tongihts effors have led me to CLEANING!!

the arches and swage lines and sills have been cleaned and the drivers side wing removed also.

I'm going to get 2 new wings and front panel and remove the engine over the next couple of weeks.

a question though… the holes in the sills left by the clipper kit mounts - how do i fill them in?? Can you get around the back to fiberglass then fill from the front?? any suggestions?

just had a new second hand MIG. A Clarke 100E Turbo. Rusty case, a bit battered but working fine!

i'm wondering if i could weld up the holes and grind them back??

Hallo dude just read your post on the chug chug thread!

This is a gutter! Hadn't seen your cab before but it's a stunner, real shame about the crash but glad nobody was hurt!

I reckon welding would be the best idea, if you're going for a respray anyway then it would seem the best way to do it to me, just do it all in a single day if you can so you're not exposing bare metal for any length of time as you'll have to rub it back to bare all the way along the sills, weld it then take it back flat and then get some sort of seal/primer on it asap.

You can always re-prep it before it goes to the bodyshop and it'll be better than fighting with rust!

Oh and btw yeah I did get the weber on. I didn't set it up very well so it was really rich for the first week, it bloody flew but obviously ran hotter than normal and burned up my wallet. I've had it properly set up now and it's great. No real performance boost to speak of but a lot better on fuel.

HTH

Cheers
Mat

not got that far due to lack of garage at the mo (mates stuff in there) and the weather, but…

Brother is coming up tomorrow to help me get the engine out, and i've bought 16v engine. so this 1.8 Carb engine will be up for grabs soon. Runs well no rattles or odd noises. and had new fuel pump and accumilator.

todays efforts.

After my brother had finished trying to skin 2 rabbits this morning, we cracked on with getting the front panel and engine out.

front panel off - finally

After loads of wobbling, jacking, axle standing, wiggling, prizing…

it would be loads easier if we were to do i again, we'd actually remove the things we need to remove rather than every thing around them! lol

Tonka (our dog) recovering from an eye infection to a liking to the angle grinder.

Took it out without draining the oil or splitting the box off. then hoiked it into the garage to drain.

then took off all the break servo and master cylinder and all the linkages.

and at the end of today it looks like this…

woo hooo!!

So if anyone know of anyone that is after a weber or a 1.8 carb engine - let me know.

Cheers!

Little bit of an update…

Pictures are better than words really but i've been busy stripping the engine bay and taking all cables and looms out and cleaning and de rusting the bay.

All parts that are taken off are put into my 'lockers' and are then degreased, dipped in vinegar overnight and then painted. It's a horrible job and it takes ages!!

Bit dark but the bay looks quite clean now!!

Had to make my own new ARB support - old one was rusted through!!

My vinegar Bath - this really works!!

All the bits after the vinegar bath.

And ALSO!! – 1.8 KR engine complete with loom and all the bits from Denemcbeth - Cheers!!

:assassin:

Today i've just cleaned out the garage so that i can get the car in there to do more rust removal etc and also having it in the dry so that the roof and windows can be removed.
