My new Golf Mk1 Cabrio Black

There is no better smell than an old golf

Hey guys. Well after months of looking for the right car i finally bought this -

I had my heart set on a red sportline but had to be realistic and opt for something more suited to my needs.

After checking the classifieds every night for 5 months this finally popped up. It looked like an honest little car and it was rock solid underneith. Paint work is completely original from what i can tell and the only non original items are the stainless exhaust and momo steering wheel. I had planned to remove the steering wheel and replace if for the standard vw pne but after looking through the pile of receipts i noticed that it had been bought only a few years after the car itself. so i actually quite like it now.

I had so many things planned for when i got a golf but it seems like now i have this one i just love everything as is.

So far -

Had the car mot'd to get an idea of what i was working with. failed on the following -

front tyre
NS spring broken
wiper blades
OS front light dim and discoloured

Guy said it was one of the cleanest undersides of a golf he has seen in 5 years. looks so clean it could have been imported (wasnt however)

2 new front tyres - toyo proxes
New bosch wiper blades

Car is going back in to get the following on monday -

Timing belt
Oil change
Oil filter
Air filter
New front spring
New hella headlight
Clutch grommet
New interior light fitted
Coolant sensor (sensor keeps flashing for a couple of seconds then turns off)

Next -

Looking to get wheels refurbished to original spec. Need to find Wheel centres. wheels are 14" montreals

Hope you like it. more pics once i can give it a wash. I attempted it earlier but washing a car in freezing 70mph winds isnt a pleasure.

Welcome and looks like you've made a good start by taking your time waiting for the right car. The only thing I would mention is I'd replace both springs as it will look lobsided, the other spring having been sat on for 20+ years.

If you are planning on keeping it, I'd also get them to change the fuel filter, flush and change the coolant, bleed the brakes are replace the gearbox oil.

Looks a great wee find :-)

Agree with above, get both springs done at the same time.

Decent MOT result too.

Get the pics coming :-)

If replacing springs, I'd also swap the shock inserts and top mounts, using OEM top mounts. I know extra £ but those on car prob past best and pulling struts to bits any way for new springs.

Cheers for the advice. Car has had full vw service history up to 100thou miles

will get all the bits that you suggested done. Just bought the other spring today.

Iv looked over the whole car and these are the bits im looking to buy or replace -

window winder
front speaker and grill - http://i120.photobucket.com/albums/o191/16vvincent/For%20Sale/Speaker-Pockets-3.jpg
top door card trim OS cabrio (3door)
rear view mirror (cabrio)
Interior light (cabrio)
interior door pull top clip. (one the the door pull is rotated 90 deg on)
side trim clips
rear badge clips
strut top caps
front hedlamp rhd (bosch or hella)
interior rear view mirror (cabrio)
Montreal wheel centres
carpet sill clips
gear gaitor
looking for an early fine slat grill with red trim also

Been looking on ebay and went to a few local scrappies but not had much luck. Parts on ebay seem overpriced.

If anyone has any of these bits feel free to pm me.

I will be looking to get the paint tidied up in the summer and possibly a new roof if i can afford it.

At the moment im trying to sort out the interior carpets. When the previous owner had an alarm installed the carpets were ripped up and are coming loose where they meet the sills.
should i just stick them back down with a spray carpet glue and then clip them back in place?

cheers
