My mk1 GTi 16v track car / fast road car

Post

So this goes back a long long way, I've copied bits and pieces across from other foums so some of it may not make sense but the general pattern will be there, it's still an on going development but it's slowed down considerably as family, business and other things have also demanded my time, I'm hoping that we have a dry summer this year and I can use it a bit more.

Here goes.

These were taken by Stephen Hall for a Golf+ feature back in 2011.

These are some of the pictures he took.  I'll copy over more in a bit.

Those are my favourites, it's very hard to narrow it down to just one picture though!

And now for a little bit of a shock, how it looked around 3 years ago, it had obviously become a little tired and needed a proper resto before it deteriorated into a pile of rust.  Having owned it for 10-12 years it's changed look quite a bit and it had always been quite a solid car and mechanically had always been spot on.

I've older pictures of when I first got it somewhere, it was wearing a clipper bodykit, a reiger rear spoiler and a set of tsw stealths.

Very tidy :$ Is that 888 tyres you use?

Post

Thanks :)

Yes R888s as 'dry tyres' although I've used them on the road in pouring rain along greasy muck covered welsh back roads and they're fine with a little heat in them.  I'll need another set of wheels so I can get some proper wet tyres, something like Eagle F1s perhaps.  I've got road/show wheels too but I'll get round to them later.

How it looked inside before…

Important bits were pretty straight though so it was worth saving!

And this is what happens when you let someone loose with some paint stripper and a flappy sanding disc…

The more keen of detail will notice this…

And this…

And this…

How long did it take you to get the bay all back to bare metal with the flappy disc and paint stripper?

Have you got anymore pictures?

Thanks Smudger.

I have got more, they're a bit jumbled up though so I'm sorting through them at the same time.  Bay didn't take too long from memory but there's something like 180 man hours in the shell before the primer stage.

Any help?

Ah ok, im going to be stripping my bay down ready for paint and to be honest im dreading it more than anything, The way your bay was is ideally how i want mine to be. Just need to crack on and stop being a wimp haha.

Bet your chuffed with the end result though
