Monty the Mk1 Clipper...

So here goes my first build thread… My partner has recently bought me a 1989 MK1 Golf Clipper as a project as I've been helping him with his Mk3 VR6 for the last year and a half and finally got my own dub to work on. I'm taking over the aesthetics but Mark will be helping out with all the mechanical side of things as my knowledge is very limited to say the least! Here's a few pictures of him at the car lot we bought him from, definitely in need of a good clean :)

He's not in bad condition, few small rust patches to deal with but the chassis appears very strong, with what seems to be nearly new inner arches. He's come equipped with a set of Borbet C's with one OZ Centre Cap and the rest missing, so finding some of them is one of the first priorities. The wheels could do with a refurb but as I've got so many ideas of which wheels I want they might not be staying on for long. I'm really pleased with the interior, there are no tears in the fabric and the leather trim on the seats is all intact. It just needs a good shampoo and some new mats. Missing a switch on the dash which is pretty irritating as I can't work out if it's a blank or not, and need to fix the choke as it seems someone pulled it a bit hard! Also could do with a slightly more subtle head unit, aside from that I want to keep him completely standard!

First few jobs include:

Replacing the flange on the carburetor as there is a small fuel leak.
Replacing the bushes, wishbones and track rod ends.
Hopefully a MK2 brake upgrade all round.
Replace side trims.
New chrome inserts for door handles.
Give the engine bay a good steam clean.
Get the roof treated with Auto Glym.
Find the Borbet centre caps.
New VW mats.
New wipers.
New aerial.
Replace side tensioners on the roof.
German pressed plates.

Can't think of anything else for the moment but I'm sure I'll find loads more to do on him.

I'd love to change the wheels straight away but think I need to do some saving first… Will either be BBS RS's, RM's, BBS E30's, Borbet A's and I like LM's but don't think they'll suit. Any opinions greatly received!

Sorry to be so specific about everything, I think I'm a bit over enthusiastic but hopefully Monty will be show worthy by early next year. Suggestions and criticisms much appreciated…

Will post pictures when work starts :)

Ok so Over the past few days it has a good wash, polish, valet inside,

Replaced the faulty carb mount that had perished with a new one from crazyquiffs..  Now works great with no leak,

Replaced the roof side tension cables with new items as the old ones had stretched/broken, Roof sits a little better when up but still not happy with the fit on the drivers side..  will have to look into this further down the line,

Ordered a set of spark plugs and a new expansion tank as the old one has seen better days.. Hopefully these will arrive today/tomorrow for us to fit,

Also found out the instrument illumination isnt working so going to pick up a new switch and bulbs today and hope this will rectify the problem,

Will post some updated pics later today  :)

Not done a whole lot aside from fixing a few niggly problems, but did give him a good wash and polish and he looks better already!

Got some goodies arriving today/tomorrow so will get them fitted and put some pics up.

Few pictures of most recent bits done to him, he's been a bit deserted recently due to us both working mad hours and although bought a new (unsnapped) aerial haven't got round to fitting it yet as I didn't realise how much hassle it is. The roof is looking a bit better after changing the side tension cables but seen a nice little British company who will make a mohair roof for £250 so hopefully Santa will be good to me next month…

Also bought him a grill spoiler but because of stupid courier it's in the box waiting for it's replacement!

He also seems to have a fuel problem at the moment, hopefully due to blocked fuel filter and nothing more serious but he remains on the drive as it's making it almost impossible to drive further than the end of the road, so will be contacting RK Engineering to get him checked out asap.

looking good :-).

Do you mean £250 for the whole roof including frame, if its just the outer mohair skin you are reffering to, give chortle on here a shout as you can probably get a mohair roof skin cheaper than that from him OR if you want a near mint one, i have one avaliable, i bought it to fit to mine, but then bought a complete roof with frame

its got a couple of places where there has been a small rub through, but no really holses, they are tiny and with a small stich with black cotton would be mint

let me know only need £70.00 for it posted to cover my costs, also have 2 x white headlinings avaliable
