Mk1 resto and abf conversion

Okay so after a first failed attempt at a mk1 (ebay buy that was rotten to the core) which i stripped for its bits and scrapped, i bought this shell and sent it down to have the bodywork touched up and a full re-spray. The bloke who did this is brilliant with bodywork and used lead filling to sort out any bits on the shell which pleased me :). At this stage its sitting on the drive waiting for me to fit the stack of parts ive been building up for it, here's some pics so far….

Getting started on the body.

Then abit of colour, i went with mk5 golf candy white.

Windows in, new front screen.

Then home, and a quick fit of the wheels, 13x8s.

Started taking tiny rust spots back to bare metal underneath then rust treating and re-undersealing all underneath and wheel arches, get some pics of the underseal on soon.

Cleaned up an re-sprayed filler neck

Cleaned up rear axle bushes, re-sprayed and polybushed

Re-sprayed my inlet and rocker cover

Cleaned, por 15'd the little rusty bits and re-painted gti tank.

Took the rear axle off to be galvanised, re-built the rear brake setup with all new parts, shoes, bearings, drums, cylinders etc.

Brake bar stripped and re-painted

Abf engine, just taken the power steering pump and brackets etc off, just cleaning up the engine fitting new cambelt, tensioner and waterpump soon. Just finding a couple of mounts and i can put it in the bay!

Just a few of my parts mountain thats building up!
Brakes

Mountain! Just see the box ive cleaned up in the corner.

New bottom arms, polys, braided hoses

New clutch

New coilies (rears are on already) and strut tops

Also anyone got the clips that go on the handy cables here and hold them into the backing plate?

Thats all the pics i can find so far, gives a rough idea of where im up too really just resto'ing all the bits i can and building the parts pile untill i can get them all fitted. Anyway i'll update as i go along now and thanks to everyone who's helped me with parts knowledge so far on here.
Comments welcome!

Did abit more today, and sprayed the front arches, engine bay and front bit of the floorpan with tetraseal (however its spelt lol) to finish that off yesterday. Glad thats out the way now anyway! And just cleaned up and re-sprayed some more bits today.

Took the old front setup off, one strut top had rusted straight through, big hole and made the captive stud just spin!

Masked up the bay.

Underseal on, went on well i thought just need touch up afew of the white paint bits in the bay.

Couple of how she stands atm

Fan cowling

Gave the calipers and carriers another lick of paint!

Then tank straps, couple of mount bits, hubs and backing plates.

The ats's won't fit over my brake setup! lol Going to try some
different brake calipers then maybe have to resort to spacers.
Anyway pics of the front built up.

Steering rack polybushes and brackets re-painted

Painted the steering rack again and changed the gaitors as
they were perished abit. Then fitted new polybushed bottom
arms/new ball joints, front coilovers, new strut tops, re-painted
hubs and backing plates and brake setup.

Also bolted the heater matrix in, took out the old gear selector
and stick, now the replacment gti one ive got has an oval base
and mine was rectangular, anyone no what i need here?
Here's a pic, old one at the top new one underneath..

And the hole it bolts into..

Any help on that one would be kool lol. Cheers

you're missing the rectangular bit the GTI stick bolts to, the old one might swap over but need to check the reverse lockout is in the right spot and a bit of trimage may be required if its from a 4 speed (so you can move it along enough to select 5th)

Ah so the oval one that its come with will come off,
or the square plate will bolt to the oval one?

look at the top of the gearsticks side by side, you'll note the oval bit is bolted down to the square bit on the old stick ;)
unbolt this and swap the square bit to the bottom of the new stick

Alrite been a while, but ive been down south completing my Raf 1st phase of training so had no time at all for the last 10 weeks on the golf. Moved up to Cosford now though for the second phase which means i'll have time to carry on with it again :). Just built the abf engine up today and it seems im missing parts of the mounts i had from crazy quiffs, i did ask for the whole things but don't think they sent them all. Could someone whack a few pics of the abf into a mk1 mounts so i can see what im missing?
