mk1 mk2

ive been into golfs for a very long time and have had a few mk2's and a couple of mk3's and have been aiming for a mk1 gti to restore and tune up. i recently bought a project that was still on the road (a mk2 1.6 driver) and its the cleanest mk2 i have ever seen so i thought it would make a good starting point for a project. but i have just been offered the car of my dreams (a mk1 gti) rolling shell so im going to do that shell instead. now my question is can i use the mk2 as a donor car for my mk1 or is everything totally different?

also i saw a mk2 in performance vw mag with a mk3 dash, would a mk3 dash fit in my mk1 with some modification?

cheers

Most of the car is different but there's a bunch of parts which are the same, and a bunch more which are 'similar but not the same'. Basically, the engine up to 1987 (K-Jet) Mk2 GTI is the same, although there are detail differences in the ancillaries such as a differnt inlet manifold, exhaust manifold, softer cam, different map on the dizzy, etc.

Gearboxes are similar but not the same - lots of different variations on boxes, see guide on left.

Front seats are the same fitment (but not same material, etc) but the rears are different.

Wheels are interchangeable.

Not much else really/???

If you're using the Mk2 1.6 driver as a donor, I don't think it would yield anything useful for a Mk1 GTI resto.
