Mk1 GTi Campaign Mini Resto

I have just been and picked my Mk1 GTi up today and can't wait to get stuck into it.  They guy I bought it from was great and honest from the start, pointing out a few problems with it before I even got chance to ask.

Now first off I am in desperate need of a new sunroof seal.  From memory these are no longer available from VW but can be bought from a few specialist places?  Could anyone point me in the right direction please of where to find one?

Second, I need the material to repair my drivers side seat bolster or a passenger side seat that is in good condition.  Can anyone help me with this please?

Third is repairing the bulkhead panel.  It has torn slightly but is still driveable.  Is there any new ways of repairing this or is it still Ok to weld it back together and then weld a normal repair plate in too?  I had a Mk1 years ago (about 11 years) and this is what I did then you see.

I hope to post a few pics of it very soon, but for now it is tucked up nice and dry in my garage.

Hi and welcome Matt

Crazyquiff on here should be able to sort you out  seat bolster or passenger seat

if you mean the area in the bulkhead where the clutch cable goes through, common fault, any welding IMO would be fine, GSF do a stick on plate that simply sticks to the bulkhead too

clean ur carpets with a pressure washer, gets so much filth out, then give it a good scrub in vanish, or washign powder etc, make it nice and clean, then let it dry on the line outside, or in a shed hanging up, then take indoors and put by fire…or near to source of heat..

now i have a lovely clean carpet

The sunroof seal was around ?35 including VAT from VW main dealer near me.  As for the bulkhead, I am planning on welding the split up to try and stop water leaking in through it, then going to fit one of those strengthening plates over it all.

I will be stripping the interior out of the car in the workshop at work, power washing the carpets and then leaving them to dry in the workshop under the big heaters!!  Might aswell get work to pay for the heating costs!!     Either that or I will go and put the carpets in the paint booth oven and leave that on for a while.

Well finally I have found time to get the Mk1 out and get some work done ;D ;D

Took it upto my work on Saturday morning so I could get it in the workshop and get it on the ramp and have a good look round.

All seems great undernieth, no signs of rust/rot anywhere.  Its all been wax oiled and undersealed by one of the previous owners.

First of all I decided to swap my alloys over.  I have kept the deep dish rims from the Mk2 and they look great on this now. :)  Never thought about it until I took the centre caps of the P slot alloys but I found it was fitted with locking wheel bolts, this is great news shame I don't have the key for them!!!! >:(  After 20 mins with a chisel and hammer they were off :o  So much for anti theft ;D

Next was the bulkhead and clutch cable.  I took the cable right out the car and made sure it moved nice and freely, all good.  Pushed the bulkhead back into place and sealed it up with some Sikoflex to stop any waterleaks in the future.  The previous night I got my repair panel and painted it Lhasa Green ready to be fitted today.  Cleaned all the area up and then fitted the panel in place.  Then smoothed round the panel with clear silocon to again try and stop any leaks.  Clutch cable re-fitted and adjusted and its all great.

Last job of the day was to renew my sunroof seal. ???  After reading several posts on different forum sites I finally found out how to do it.  Slowly the roof came out and onto the workshop floor.  I stripped the roof down and found a rather rotten rear drain plate!!  Not good.  I renewed the main seal and cleaned the rotten plate up as best possible for now.  I refitted the roof and tried it, DOH!!!!  I had fitted the runners in the wrong place so it all had to come out again and be refitted once more. ::)  Now I had sorted my little problem out the roof worked fine and seems to be sealed nicely. :)

By this time Saturday had flown by with a few minor destractions and it was now 7pm.  I left it in the workshop until Sunday night once I had returned from my 'Round England' drive collecting cars!!  Finally I got to drive my Mk1 ;D ;D

As I bought the car from a guy that lived at the end of my road I hadn't driven it far at all and it had no fuel in it, hence why I took it to work on the truck.  I nipped next door to my work and fueled the Mk1 up, time for a blast!!

Wow, really happy with it ;D  Feels so much lighter and nippier than my Mk2 or Mk3.  Had a nice blast home with no major issue's raising there heads at all, which is nice.  Insurance was swapped over to it on Saturday so its my daily driver now too.  Here are a few pics of the day.

The car already has some form of lowered suspension fitted, it was fitted around 8 years ago though!!!  Hoping to drop it abit more in the future but my attentions are needed else where first!!

Tomorrow morning I am off to work to do some more to the Mk1 again.  Earlier in the weeke I found that the drivers side steering rack mount was coming away from the bulkhead, not good!! :?

So my plan for tomorrow is to remove the exhaust down pipe, steering rack, centre console and carpets and the hopefully seam weld the mounts both to the bulkhead and then add a strengthening bar inbetween them both.

After this I will renew the gearbox mount and add the new clear front indicators and maybe bleed the brakes as the fluid looks quite black and dirty.

Well I had quite a successful day yesturday. :D

The steering rack mounts were easier than I thought they were going to be and the end result looks nice and tidy to.  Clear front indicators are now fitted and have cleaned the front end of the Mk1 up alot in my opinion.

I bled the brakes too and the state of the fluid that came out was horrid!!! :o   It looked like old stale coffee and was nice and thick.  Only trouble is I only managed to bleed the front brakes.  I couldn't get any fluid out either of the rear wheel cylinders at all, I am suspecting that the rear load valve is siezed and not letting any fluid through.  So I have this to look at this week now, and replace the NSR wheel cylinder as I snapped the bleed nipple of when tightening it back up!! DOH!!

Well thats all my fun from my Mk1 for now :(

Just started to strip it down this weekend and it is now parked up in the garage awaiting its new panels and paint.  It should be having a pair of new genuine front wings, rear arch repair panels both sides and any other little bits along the way.

Hoping to have it all done in time for our trip south for RTTS this year :D
