Mk1 golf driver 1.3, been stood 17 years on a drive

Post

After a few years of company cars and hours looking at Mk1 Golf’s on ebay, I stumbled across an Mk1 Driver in gold.
The car was sold to a guy who had not passed his test in 1996, he put it on his mother’s drive ready for the day he passed his test.
He failed his first test and gave up, the car until now has sat on a drive in leeds.
I coincidentally work with the former owner of the car, and he told me the history of what he had done and its maintenance, he was very lavish and always tried to keep it tip top as he used to say.
It had a spare set of alloys, which he only put on in the summer months 15” BBS of some sort, these got taken to the tip last month!!! Why why why why why!!! Some people.
I was originally looking at Big block mk1’s, previously had a Golf C 1.1 mk1 and a 1.5 Gx but have dived in to this restore, was thinking of fitting a Kr but I feel I should leave it standard??
What do you think, if I put a big block In while it effect the originality of the driver??

Looks like she is worth saving and restoring mate. If I were you I would try to keep it original but that's just me.

How much does he want for it?

Hi Mate,

I would echo Smudger's comments, best to keep it original. ;).

I've got a thread going of my Regatta Blue driver which I've just finished restoring, and its a real catcher and raises comments wherever I go .

If you need any help, or want any photos of areas of resto, give me a shout .

Good luck with the rebuild and keep the photos coming

Cheers

David

Cheers guys, i paid £400 smudger, not sure if that's good or not but i like the car as i know the history of it.

Got her cleaned up and she started second turn, Clifford alarm still works fine.
Cleaned the fuel tank first and cleaned out the fuel lines with the help of my dad.

The underside is great it been looked after over the years, just finished the welding on the rear wheel arch.
Removed all the trim and checked the brake lines which are ok, going to change the pads on the front.

Can't believe how sweet the engine is 101000 on the clock.

ill upload more pics, going to keep her standard apart from upgrading the brakes and fit coil overs.

Was thinking about some ronal turbo alloys and removing the seats (keep them tho) and fitting some 924 tombstone seats.

The gold colour is starting to grow on me plus its different.
Love the blue Regatta David I have had a look at your restore and its top draw mate.

Time to order a Back box and pads!!

Cheers

Matt

Update

Just about ready for the MOT, welding finished and engine is great, just a hole in the down pipe to sort out.

Windscreen wipers front not working and the reverse lights to sort out!!

Got some Le Castellet 14" off ebay for it, and hopefully get her home to save up for a respray.

Going with the rat look paint work until i can get it sorted.

Cant wait to get her on the road!!

Right not far off the MOT now, had to
Replace Backbox

Drill out and replace the studs for the downpipe bracket from the exhaust manifold
Remove the exhaust manifold, this was a right job rusty nuts, managed to remove ok after 6 hours.
Free off the wiper motor
Replace Master Cylinder.
Replace Bulbs
4 tyers .

Had a spin around the yard, great engine and very nippy. cant wait the get back on the road in a mk1!!!

Saving for a respray

The Goldenwonder has just run out of tax, haven't done anything major over the past 6 months but drive the mk1, in this time had only one issue with the condenser.

The 4sp box has taken some getting used too,  going to Leeds on the m62 screaming past people in 4th gets some funny looks.

Had a quote of £1800 for a re-spray (including all the prep work, seen his work and it is spot on. Not sure if this is a good price or not???

Had an idea of a wrap until I saved up for a re paint,  but at £900 for a gold metallic wrap I think ill save the cash for the paint.

On the to-do list,

Need to replace the windscreen panel as its rotten and sort the rear wheel arches.

Suspension need sorting out as it very tired and thinking coilovers as im keeping it standard 1.3 gf. slow and low (not too low as Selby's roads are full of holes) and fit arb and re bush.

Thinking of powder coating some le castellet alloys black and fitting them  (tried to polish one, but don't think it will go with the black trim.)

Need to find a drivers seat same as original in good condition, and change the front bumper (it has a grey GX bumper on at the min)

Plenty to get on with tho mo fo's

alright mate, car looks wicked, fair play for saving it. with paint you get what you pay for, so sometimes cheapest isnt best.

nice! i've had a few gold drivers, they seem to suffer less rot than other colours in my experience.

would be nice to see it fully restored to original glory, there's not many around anymore.

£400 is a steal

£1800 for a full respray including the prep sounds good to me. If you know and trust his work I'd bite his arm off!

Right, car passed its second mot last month and this weekend I moved the golf out from the garage after doing the following.
Fitted new wishbones which were seam welded.
Fitted new bushes on the front end, and fitted the anti-roll bar,
Need to referb the rear drums, and then get the car sprayed.

I made a snap decision and got a 1.4 16v AFH engine, and Fazer 600 bike carbs.
Never done an engine swap on an mk1 before, did one on an old metro with my mate when I was 18.
Getting the tax sorted so I can have some mk1 fun!!

Need to adjust the coilovers and then get the wheel alignment sorted.
