Mk1 Golf 1.1 C - TDI Conversion
after slogging it for months on the GTI in my other thread, i saw this golf C come up. So that project will go on the back burner! Its the find ive been looking for for 5 years, and i finally have found it. I wasnt willing to spend 3k on a minter, that doesnt interest me, this i found for a "small fee" and its an absolute corker in my eyes. To some of you it looks like an awful expample, however to the "welders" and restorers on the forum you will appreciate what i have here!!
More or less FSH, with the original stamped service service book, no welding has ever been attempted, nor did it have to be, it spent about 10 years in its middle life in a garage, 4 of the last 6 on the road and the last 2 sitting under some trees!!!
It has been started and rolled forwards and back once a week for the last 2 years!!!!
The last owner bought it at 49k and its now on 55k.
I couldnt believe it when i got there! The only real damage is to the sills, where "some experimental" jacking has taken place, still, no rust however…..
So here we go, i havent touched it, no cleaning , nothing….
And the money shot!!!
And i have no doubt that its genuine, i will get picks up of the bay at the weekend, and after a good clean and polish!!!
Any comments more than welcome!

i'll have a loo at the weekend, i just dont want to disturb the lip where the sill meets the floor pans, its not rusted for 24 years, so i dont want to open it up now!

wooo really? I will deffo have a look in a min. It will be to restore the engine bay to standard, ie engine refresh, bay clean, new clutch and plate
Then to make it ride like it should i will….
poly bush,
coilies,
proper wheels,
But first to get it through the mot it needs rear brakes just to make sure it passes, and an engine service inc plugs, filters, oil, maybe dizzy rotor arm etc….
I may actually sell my other project to fund this one, unsure as yet.
Thanks for the comments guys.

First off i decided to ask a friend around to help with the dismal paintwork, due to it being stood in a garden for 2 years the tree it was under had left its mark!!! Also i am trying to determine what is going to be salvagable and what will be resprayed….
So we started with this…..
After two washes we used some paint cleaner from auto glym and got this…..
The we clayed the car and got this….
I have never seen a clay bar get so dirty!!! And there is still loads left on the paint, it will take a few go's to get it off, but i finished with a wax to seal. And as the bonnet was clayed twice gave it a quick rotary polish…..
The doors before claying and paint clean
Roof before
Bonnet during
My mate elliot helping out! Cheers mate
Rook after
The car after
And heres a mk2 i saw last week, with wheels on it i would eat my left nad for
They would look awesome on my car!!! hmmmmmmmmmmmm

Did an oil change and filter change (VAG ofcoarse)
Air Filter
Fuel Filter
Replace the window seal scraper thing on the doors
I Was going to repalce the clutch cable as its still but the more i use it the better its getting, i assume it was a sticky clutch plate…..
So i have one here if anyone needs one!
Next Jobs,
Replace window washer squirter thing on bonnet
Adjust Clutch Cable
Fit Stereo - I was going to stay retro but i have a 500 quid setup doing nothing, with boston component spekers which sound amazing, not loud but amazing nonetheless.
Swap wheels for the P-Slots form the polo in the pic above
cheers, Scott

Although i havent beeen posting recently, i have been very busy….
I only have afters pics, but hope you will appreciate them….
I have been over on the migwelding forum getting tips and advice on spraying and bodywork.
Here are the results first…
So the story…
I had a spare wing (pattern) in the garage from my abandonned project.
Stripped to bare metal (it had about 1mm of 2pack primer on) This wasnt fun
Etch primed the whole panel
Primed with cellulose primer (2 coats)
Guide coated
Blocked with P400 then P600
Reprimed to rid the lows
Guided
Primed once more, blocked again with P600
3 coats of colour (Mars red)
After this had dried (1 week baking in my car) it didnt turn out well, i made a few mistakes , the gun was at 4 Bar not 2 Bar, i mixed the paint in the gravity cup not in a mixing container, didnt strain the paint, this left the finish pretty awful, a lot of overspraqy, dry spots, and large Blobs of paint on the surface, so it was all rubbed down quite a lot with the da, then blocked and i went again at it with 2 coats of colour,
This turned out really well, still with a fair bit of orange peel but thats always going to happen,
So i blocked it and hand sanded it with P1500 then finished with P2000
This was then attacked with the rotary, (my first real rotary polishing i might add) firt with a 3m Blue pad with Fast Cut Plus, then the yellow pad with Fine Cut Compound.
It has turned out awesome! Im so happy with the results, the colour match is good, depth of shine even without wax (still waiting for the paint to harden) is top!
I did make a mistake with the rotary and burnt through in the tiniest of posts, but its where the bumper attatches, so wont even be seen. I cant wait to get the door done next week, as i have a week off work…..
Im thinking of doing a detailed How to soon from start to finish, as it took me months and months to gather info of every stage (i am very particular with every detail)
Any sorry to babble on.

its just sticking to a plan, and make your plan as detailed as possible….
Its was hard work flatting it though, and i may next time go for P800 before colour coats. I dont really want to though to be honest….
we'll see.

On the upside, my golf now has a new rea panel on it and has had the whole rear end and underside at the rear derusted, rebult, and treated to Rustbuster Epoxy Mastic!!!
So here are a few pics, i will get some of the underside tomorrow. What a job, took 3 1/2 10 hour days to get it ready for the new panel……
Horrible. Really happy now. I have just rattle canned the bare metal for now and i cant spray it properly for a few weeks. Just to keep it waterproof…
So still need to do a bit more rattlecanning and a bit more finishing, and the panel needs stonechipping at the bottom, and stonechipping on the underside……
ALso , got some epoxy mastic in my eye, (a lot) and nearly ended up going to A and E…..
Anyway, cheeers.

well jelly, the gti is going im afraid. I havent really got the time to finish it so decided to take on a smaller project. It will be up for sale soon, its such a shame after spending well over 150 hours on it.
But hey, ive got this to work on now! I am in contact with a retired sprayer of 30 years and he is helping out so so much with the spraying. as hes retired hes just telling me everything he knows!!! Honestly its invaluable info.
The back panel was a pleasing little project to do, i used a whole tub of seam sealer on it too haha!!! The long term plans for this are.
Summer 2009 - Body work and paint
Late 2009 - Interior (headlining) + Polybushing whole chassis, brake upgrade
2010 - 16vT? Maybe, maybe not.
Either way, the massive 1093cc beast cannot be a long term powerplant ! Haha
