mk1 cab 16v
Although I say its mine its actually my girlfriends.. I just get to spend all my money and do all the work
It started out as 89 karmann cab gti
It was in a pretty bad way when we got it but slowly bringing it back to its former glory, all be it with a 16v engine
The hood was a complete write off and the electro hydraulic rams were leaking. On the way home from picking it up we had the hood down, only for it to start raining and the hood wouldnt go up
The guy we got it off said ?the fan belt was squealing so? I sprayed some WD40 on it??? hero!
Anyway, gave it a mini re-build/service, new hood, rams and drove it without any issues for a year or so.
Then the girlfriend decided she wanted to take it off the road and give it an overhaul! Lucky me
So it begins:
Started by ripping everything out..
Cleaned the bay
Now that?s dedication!
Riveted the clutch plate into place and prepped for paint
Re welded engine mount
Prepped bay for paint, decided to not bother smoothing, mostly cause I couldn?t be bothered
Bay after paint.. not a bad finish considering we used rattle cans
Donor car? my mates tin top that he put in a ditch.. shame was such a nice car. But I did get everything off it for 200 bucks engine 16v kr, gearbox (even though its foooked), fuel lines, filler neck, fuel pump, servo, looms etc even took the battery..
Got the engine etc home gave it all a quick clean and paint. Engine was running nice before and the guy had just spent a bit of money getting it set up.
Mounted everything in, wasnt to bad getting it in with the gearbox on… but i wont be doing it again!!
i hooked the gear linkage up as i wanted to feel what the box was like.. and it was foooked!! couldnt find any gears! so in a rage i took the box off and put a different one on. while i was there i polyed the mounts
note:totally destroying the lovely paint job on the mount housing ops:
4 branch ashley manifold in place
everything is mostly finished now after many weekends/evenings loads of money at vw and a mental breakdown just trying to figure out some crazy wiring issue (thread in electrical if anyone can help)
latest picture from last night… laptop with wiring digrams
cant wait to get it running! so close now
thanks for looking

Looks a nice clean engine, hope it all works out ok, wiring can be a pain!!
One thing, if the Ashley is a mild steel, they don't like being wrapped up too well as the wrap holds moisture and will slowly rot your mani, i got told this off a top guy as i was going to do it to mine, but got told not to do it and to make a heat shield for the steering gaiter as it's mighty close to the manifold!!
Top work though :y:

the manifold, unfortunately, i got already wrapped and it was really cheap.. it will hopefully be ok for a while until i can afford a stainless
as for the girlfriend… couldnt really ask for more! loves volkswagens and i got a constant flow of tea while im working on it

Finally got it running today Runs really nice!
Took us about half an hour hooked up to a transit before she finally fired!
Been having problems with the fuel pump :? cant get it to run with the relay so i took the relay and just bridged it for now…
Im tempted to just bypass the relay and put a switch in but id rather get it working properly.. but for now im just stoked it runs
front control arms, cv boots, track rods/ends and steering rack boots left to do
The G/F is undecided on what wheels she wants to run.. think she's after a 14.. but we'l see…

If there is'nt a direct plug to connect it in then splice the wire into the red/yel fuel pump wire instead.
67 blue relay in position 2.
You'll have the pump working as it should off the key then
