MK1 Golf GTi + AUM 1.8t + MK4 Dash....Hopefully

Hi, names Paul. I'm taking over a project started by my Bro many years ago.

He bought a tidy MK1 Golf GTi shell, front half of a MK4 Golf complete with AUM 1.8t, 02A Gearbox, ATS Cups, Rollcage all in the hope of turning it all into a nice little motor. He never really had the time and has since moved out and got married and had a kid so priorities have changed. All this has been sitting at my parents in their garage gathering dust.

I've decided to take on the challenge and will probably be asking lots of questions on various forums. I'll get some pics up soon as i need to sort out hosting.

I really want to plumb in the mk4 dash and keep the air con!

Welcome Paul - looks like you sorted out the pics ok!

Nice project - fair amount of work left to do? Have you got a final look in mind for it yet?

Greetings Paul and welcome to the forum. Another 20v project to join the ranks

Looks like there's loads to do from the pics. Best of luck with it. Keep us updated with pics :)

Yes, loads of work but that's half the fun. :P

Not sure on the final look yet, i think i'll let it evolve as i do bits but something close to standard looking. But with MK4 interior would be nice. Paint it in original red with GTi strips. not sure on wheels as i've since found he sold the Cups :o

I've currently got the rear beam in bits ready to get powder coated and will probably buy new wishbones and poly the lot. I need to get a tilter/rotiesseire thing to flip the shell on its side to strip and re-paint the underside. and reccomendations? I'm looking on ebay at the ones on there, they are about £150 unbuilt.

Stripping the underside will be fun! It's a laborious job - heat gun probably works best. Some say if all looks intact and rust free not to remove the original underseal. However, IMO the underseal can sometimes hide some nasties
